Slate tiles are a beautiful addition to any home. The varied shades of gray (and sometimes purple, green or blue) work together to accent a variety of decor schemes. To keep your slate tile worthy of being the focal point of the room, you must care for them regularly. Slate is a durable flooring material, but over time, dirt buildup can scratch, abrade and dull its surface. To prolong the life of your slate tile, commit to keeping it clean and protected. Instructions as follows: Firstly, blot up (do not wipe) liquid spills immediately. Liquids, especially acidic liquids like wine, orange juice or vinegar, can eat through the slate's finish and penetrate to the porous tile beneath. If they dry there, the stains they leave behind may become permanent. Secondly, sweep or dry mop the tile floor at least twice weekly or whenever you notice dirt or dust. Dirt and dust abrade the surface as they are tracked over the floor. They quickly wear through the finish in high-traffic areas and can penetrate down to the slate. When you sweep your slate floor, sweep all of the hard surfaces in your home to avoid tracking dirt from one surface to the next. Thirdly, mop the floor whenever you notice soil that the broom is unable to lift. Once or twice monthly is often sufficient. If possible, use the mopping solution recommended by your slate tile's installation company. If that is not available, use a pH-neutral or alkali floor cleaner. Fourthly, once a month, drip a few drops of water onto the high-traffic areas of your slate flooring. If the slate's coating is intact, the water will bead up. Wipe it up immediately. If the bead of water soaks into the slate floor, it is time to reapply the finish. Contact your slate floor's installation company to strip then reapply the slate floor's finish. Or, find out what type of finish was applied and the right products to use to strip and reapply the finish yourself. Do not put off refinishing your slate floor. Exposed slate is brittle, delicate and susceptible to abrasion from even low traffic. Tips & Warnings Place felt pads on the bottom of chairs and tables so they don't abrade the slate floor. Remove your shoes before walking on the slate floor to avoid tracking dirt onto it. Or, place mats on both sides of the door's threshold to catch dirt. Each mat must be at least as wide as the doorway. Avoid using rubber or jute-backed mats. They may stain the slate's finish. Never use an oil-treated dust mop on a slate tile floor. Never use acidic cleaners on slate flooring. If you find that a stain will not come up after mopping or hands on scrubbing with the floor solution, water and a non-abrasive sponge, it has likely penetrated beneath the finish. When it's time to re-finish the floor, clean the spot again once the old finish is stripped. Or, point the stain out to the professionals responsible for refinishing your floor. Always test any cleaning product you intend to use on an inconspicuous spot on the slate tile before using it on the entire floor. The cleaner may discolor the tile or strip the finish.
