Stone fireplaces with matching stone walls are generally designed to bring the outdoors into a home. Arts and Crafts and related home styles frequently include a stone fireplace wall in an informal shared area, giving dens and living rooms the rustic feel of a ski or hunting lodge. Stone fireplace walls have their own challenges. For instance, designing around them is often difficult. Types of Stone Fireplace/Wall A stone fireplace wall is most frequently built of brick or natural rock, not cut or shaped rock. In most cases, the natural rock is from the area where the house is located. This practice is consistent with Arts and Crafts architecture and tends to bring the outdoors into the home. Sometimes the stone fireplace wall is just faux brick or sandstone applied to drywall or sheet rock walls, with the faux stone's appearance designed to blend with the real fireplace. While the look of such a wall is not as good as a real stone wall, it is also easier to make changes to when renovating. Clean and maintain this sort of stone wall in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Maintenance Stone fireplace walls are pretty easy to maintain and clean, provided you do it on a regular basis. You should vacuum the cracks and crevices in the wall at least once a month to remove loose debris and dust. While vacuuming, check for loose mortar and repair as needed. If you have too much soot or dust to remove easily by vacuuming, mix salt and soap with enough water to make a creamy paste. Rub this paste into the trouble spots. Allow it to dry, then scrub with a stiff bristle brush and vacuum away the debris until clean. Get a professional to address large cracks or heavy creosote buildup. Blending Decor A stone fireplace wall, in most cases, gives a room a warm, informal feeling. Don't even try to decorate this room formally. Instead, look for informal, homey designs. Traditional Arts and Crafts design, with lots of natural woods and fabrics, will always work in a room like this. Southwestern decor usually works well, as does traditional country or rustic decor. Your fireplace area will be the focal point of the room. Keep this area clean and clear of clutter, and decorate the rest of the room to complement it. Common Features Fireplace walls are nearly always attached to a functional traditional chimney, allowing you to burn wood in the fireplace. This means your fireplace will at least have a flue and a firescreen. In many cases, a small trap door in the floor of the fireplace allows easy cleaning; you can sweep ashes into the trap door, which leads to a chute that directs ash outside. The fireplace wall will have either a built-in mantel or some feature, such as projecting rocks, that will allow easy installation of a mantel. In some cases, the fireplace wall is fronted with a wide hearth that provides a convenient sitting area and place to set wood and fireplace tools.
