So many products from dish and laundry soaps, shampoos, hand soaps, body washes and more rely on sulfates to thicken and suds their formulas. However consumers should BEWARE of sulfates – they are considered a high level irritant causing eye and skin tissue damage. Sulfates are used to dissolve grease and so as you can imagine it does the same for the natural oils on our skin, our hair and eyes. Studies by The American College of Toxicology and the National Institute of Health's Household Product Directory show over 80 products that use concentrations of SLS of up to 30% (0.5% is considered a low irritant while 30% is considered a severe irritant and highly dangerous). Plus, this ingredient absorbs quickly and studies show long term retention of this chemical in the body. This incredibly drying ingredient cannot be metabolized in the liver, which means it hangs around and causes havoc on the body. Sulfates can go by many names, plus many surfactants (soaps) use sulfates in their formulations. A common contaminant in sulfates is dioxane, a known carcinogen. So years back when news came out that sulfates were not a carcinogen, what the industry did not tell everyone is that many sulfates still have dioxanecontaminiation due to the manufacturing processes of the sulfates. Better to err on the safe side for all the reasons above and choose Sulfate-Free products and write your favorite brands asking them to remove these harmful chemicals from their ingredient lists. Enough consumer awareness can generate change! Recently a woman called into Eco-Me's customer service department asking if our products had any sulfates in them.
