Mosaics consist of glass or ceramic tiles in different colors. These colored tiles combine to create shapes, patterns and designs. Draw a paper mosaic by creating a paper grid that you fill in with different colors. If you intend to turn your mosaic drawing into a real mosaic, measure the surface where the final mosaic will sit and the tiles you intend to add to the mosaic. Instructions as follows: Firstly, measure the object for which you intend to design a mosaic using measuring tape. For example, if you are adding a mosaic to the corner of a table, measure the corner. If you do not intend to create a mosaic from your design, skip this. Secondly, determine the appropriate scale, if necessary. A common scale is 1:2, meaning that the tiles you actually use will be twice the width of your drawn pieces. Divide the measurements by the scale to determine the width and height of the drawing. For example, if the table is 12 inches by 12 inches, and you want to use a 1:2 scale, divide the measurement by two to find that the design will need to be 6-by-6. Thirdly, draw the overall shape on a sheet of paper using a ruler and pencil. Add a grid to the paper. Most grids have between 10 and 30 squares on each side. If you intend to turn your design into a finished mosaic, measure the size of the marble tiles you intend to use. Divide the total width of the finished mosaic by the width of the tiles to determine how many tiles there should be on each side. Draw light, fine lines for the lines of the grid. Fourthly, draw the outline of the design onto the paper using a light colored pencil. This design is a guide for which tiles you fill in and does not need to follow the tiles perfectly. Use a very light line that will not be visible when you color over it. Fifthly, fill in the tiles of a specific shape or pattern with a colored pencil. For example, if you wish to create a mosaic of a tree, fill in the trunk of the tree with brown pencils. Sixthly, continue filling in tiles of the pattern or shapes with colored pencils, until you finish the design.
