The appearance of granite consists of a base color overlaid with blotches or spots of other colors. Paint is a great medium for creating a granite look on Formica or plastic countertops, walls, wood, shower stalls and other solid surfaces. Faux granite kits come with all the necessary instructions and components, which include a base color plus sparkly minerals. Alternatively, you can create the granite appearance yourself. Study a picture of the granite you want to emulate and buy the three most prominent colors; then blend them using creative brush strokes and other methods. Instructions as follows: Firstly, clean the surface to be painted with a degreaser and patch any scuffs or dents with the recommended material for the surface you are working with. You may have to sand the patches to ensure smoothness. Secondly, stick masking tape around the sides of the area you want to paint to create clean edges. Preparation is the most important aspect of any paint job, so do not rush or skimp. If you are applying the paint to an absorbent surface like wood, drywall, masonry or concrete, you will have to paint the entire surface with a regular primer first. Ask your paint seller for recommendations. Thirdly, paint the entire surface with the granite base or primary color. First use a foam brush around the edges, and fill in the center with a roller, working in three-foot-square sections. Allow this coat to dry for several hours, as recommended by the manufacturer. Fourthly, blot on your secondary color if you are not using a kit. Use a paintbrush, an old towel or a sponge, and allow the first color to show through. Allow the second color to dry. Fifthly, apply the minerals, if using a kit. This is the product that creates the granite effect. Some manufacturers require you to add the minerals to a paint base and stir them in, then paint over the first coat with a brush, while others provide a sponge that you use to dab the minerals onto the surface. Follow up with a clear coat once the minerals are dry. Sixthly, spray or flick on the third color if you are not using a kit. Blot as you did the second coat, or dip a toothbrush into the paint and flick it on, taking care not to hit other surfaces. Allow the third color to dry. Seventhly, sand the surface lightly with a fine-grit sandpaper and apply one or two polyurethane top coats. Allow the surface coat to dry fully. This may take as long as 48 hours. Tips & Warnings Granite colors may be light and dark olive green with black spots or flecks; gray with light brown and white spots; light brown, dark brown and cream. It also sometimes has sparkly gold spots in it.
