Fence-post installation may be just one of the many steps involved in constructing a fence, but it is unmistakably one of the most critical ones. Posts installed incorrectly can lead to broken fences, injured animals or people, and compromised fence integrity. Learning proper fence-post installation techniques will save time and money in the long run. Although fence-post installation is not difficult, it is a skill that improves with experience. Instructions as follows: Firstly, map out the area to be fenced. Avoid underground utilities. Draw a line to mark the fence location. Mark the location for each fence post on the map. Secondly, place garden stakes around the entire area to be fenced. Keep the stakes in a straight line. Attach twine to each of the stakes and stretch it tight. Check each corner for straightness with a builders square, making any needed adjustments. This will be a guide for installing the posts in a straight line. Thirdly, spray paint on the location for each post. Spray each mark in a straight line, using the twine and stakes as a guide. Spray the mark for each post an equal distance apart. Remove the twine and stakes. Fourthly, dig a hole about 3 feet deep on one of the corner marks. The hole should be about 2 inches wider than the post. Remove any large artificial stones from the hole. Repeat with the remaining corner marks. Fifthly, place 6 inches of gravel in the bottom of each of the corner post holes. This will aid drainage and keep the corner posts strong. Sixthly, place one of the posts in a hole. Nail two support boards to the side of the post to hold it in place. Use a spirit level to check the straightness of the post. Adjust it until it is perfectly vertical. Repeat with each corner post. Seventhly, mix the quick-drying concrete, following package instructions carefully. Pour concrete around each of the corner posts. Allow the concrete to harden. Remove the support boards. Eighthly, dig a hole about 2 feet deep at each of the remaining post marks. The holes need to be only 1 inch wider than the posts. Ninthly, place a post in one of holes. Nail two support boards to the side of the post to hold it in place. Repeat for each post. Tenthly, pack the dirt outside the hole back into the hole around the post. Pack the dirt down tightly to ensure a secure hold. Repeat with the remaining post holes. Allow the posts to set overnight before removing support boards. Tips & Warnings Cut the tops of the posts evenly for a more attractive fence. Stain each post with a high-quality outdoor stain before installing. Put several inches of gravel in each post hole in areas with bad drainage. Sand the posts near fence openings. Ask an assistant to help hold the post vertical while nailing the support boards. Check local building codes before installing a fence.
