Most of the speech problems are due to the frenums. Frenums are referred to the ligament that combines the lips and tongues of an individual to the gum and jaw bone in the mouth. If the lips and tongues are held too high by the frenum, it can cause several issues such as: gum recession which may cause gap between the front upper and lower teeth, an opening in the individual tooth, and gaps between other teeth as well. All About Tongue Ties For all the people, a tongue usually moves freely around the teeth, moreover it is not limited to teeth and can extend it out from the jaw to the lips. For the infants, the tongue has a special role for which the tongue is positioned between the gum pads creating a vacuum for swallowing, this is also known as infantile swallow. After a certain age and when all the initial teeth are replaced by new ones the infantile swallow is also replaced by adult swallow. In adult swallow, the pair of lips are properly closed, both the upper and the lower jaw can bite together and the tongue is pressed against the front of the upper jaw. A toung tie occurs when the tongue stays attached to the bottom in the mouth which restricts the free movement of the tongue around the mouth. Tongue tied procedure can be followed in order to separate the ligaments effectively so as to prevent various issues that may lead to: • Obstruction in the speech and it may also become difficult for the infants to take the feed if they have tongue tied. This issue is majorly observed by the doctors, midwives and mothers. • Child with tongue tie are not able to develop into adult swallow and continue to consume with their infantile swallow that is with the jaw apart. • Sleep interruptions from the children. • Unable to grow properly and naturally due to poor breastfeeding. • Orthodontic problems such as open bite and crowded teeth can also develop due to tongue tie because of being unable to swallow properly. • Most of the children are not able to manage well while talking quickly due to inaccurate joins in the mouth. • Other Dental issues are also likely to occur more as the food debris is not removed by the action of tongue sweeping and saliva spreeding. Due to all such dental issues and communication problems an individual may develop poor self esteem and lack of confidence as well. Treating a Tongue Tie Situation One of the most effective and popular tongue tied procedure involves laser removal of the ligaments joining the tongue and the lower part of the jaw. The procedure just takes a couple of minutes provided that the patient should stay very still for a successful resection. The surgery causes no bleeding, no stitches are required, no restrictions and does not even cause any discomfort. Even though there will be no problems, the patients can immediately go back to their same routine, yet in certain cases, the patient may require sessions from a dentist in case of poorly aligned teeth or a speech therapist if speech problems persist.
