Mangalore is the popular place of Karnataka. It is also known as chief port city of the state of Karnataka. Geographically, this place is sublimely located between Arabian Sea and the Western Ghat mountain ranges. It is the administrative headquarters of the Dakshina Kannada district. The name Mangalore is originated from the Hindu goddess Mangaladevi. Mangalore was influentially dominated by many dynasties like Kadambas, Vijayanagar dynasty, Rashtrakutas,Chalukyas and Hoysalas and the Portuguese. Each and every dynasties had left their individual mark. The city was the part of Madras Presidency till 1947 and later in 1956 this place was became a part of Karnataka when it was regarded as 'state of Mysore'. Mangalore is marked as an important port on the Arabian sea as it maintains 75% of coffee export and major columns of cashew export. This place is beautifully placed on the backwaters of the Netravati and Gurupura rivers and is utilized to maintain the sea traffic. The place is landscaped with rugged hills, coconut palms and whitish streams. The red-clay tiled-roof buildings are noticed here. The local inhabitants use many languages including, Konkani, Tulu Kannada and beary. This place is designated as the eighth cleanest city in the country. The economy of this place depends on the agriculture and port related activities. The boat building and fishing industry are the main business of this place that comes from its past generations. Many classical dance forms and folk arts are well nurtured in the city. The Yakshagana, a night-long dance and drama performance is very famous in Mangalore. Another unique dance forms are Pilivesha (literally, tiger dance), a folk dance is generally performed during Krishna Janmashtami and Desehra. Desehra is also highlighted with the another popular dance performance like Karadi Vesha (bear dance). Paddanas (Ballad-like epics passed on through generations by word of mouth) are sung by a Tulu community accompanied with rhythmic drum beats. Most of festivals are celebrated here included Ganesh Chaturthi,Diwali, Christmas, Easter and Eid. Kodial Theru or Mangaluru Rathotsava (Mangalore Car Festival) is celebrated at the Sri Venkatramana Temple. Other religious feasts are Monti Fest (Mother Mary's feast), Jain food festival celebrated by The Jain Milan, a community of Jain people. Karavali Utsav and Kudlostava are celebrated grandly along with dance, drama and musical performances. Bhuta Kola (spirit worship) and Nagaradhane (snake worship) are some native festivals with individual religious value. Mangolorean cuisine is very famous and mostly dominated by south Indian flavor. Mangalorean Fish Curry is a popular dish along with Bangude Pulimunchi (silver-grey mackerels) Kori Rotti (dry rice flakes dipped in gravy), Beeja-Manoli Upkari and delicious Neer dosa, Boothai Gasi, Kadubu, and Patrode. As mangalore is a coastal town so fish is the staple food of most of the people. Here, Vegetarian cuisine is known as Udupi cuisine, Pickles such as sandige, happala,and puli munchi carry the unique taste to this place. Shendi (toddy), a country liquor prepared from coconut flower sap, is well known in Karnataka. This place distinctly carries its historical heritage with the existences of antique monuments, museums and religious temples.
