Staying agile with UI Prototyping

Computers,Software

Building a website or new software can be a long and arduous process. In larger corporations, a website can be complex and there are often many sign-off structures even before coding begins. In this environment it can be difficult to adapt quickly to change, or to user feedback. Many large teams use UI prototyping to conceptualize their websites or software designs. This article will look at the benefits of UI prototyping and how larger corporations can use prototypes to stay agile in their processes.

Communication is Key

In larger companies, many teams work together on the same project. This means that there are many different specialisms and requirements that must be balanced. It can often be difficult to demonstrate these requirements, simply by emailing back and forth. People often like to be able to show through visual aids exactly what they envision for the design. One solution for keeping on top of the different design iterations is by using a UI prototyping tool. Prototyping software can often be used remotely and collaboratively, which means that all employees should be aware of the latest updates to the project. This also means if a person from the UX team knows that the landing page the marketing team is working on is not in keeping with the rest of the site, this can also be communicated in the tool itself, and a suggestion made for change.

Involving Users

Websites and software products are always designed with a user in mind. It’s paramount that a project has the user in focus. In traditional processes, users are asked in a focus group about what their requirements would be for an application or website and users will also be invited for testing in the end phase. With lean UX methods, the user is not asked what he wants, but he is shown an application and asked to interact with it. The benefit of UI prototyping is that an interactive prototype can be made very quickly without programming. The moderator of a test session can even make changes in the middle of a test to see how a user responds to different scenarios. By creating UI prototypes, designers can try out their concepts with users in context.

Conclusion

There are often many iterations in software development, whether it is through a linear waterfall model, or by following the theories of agile UX. Rather than perfecting each stage before moving to the next, as with the waterfall method, followers of lean UX prefer to get through each iteration as quickly as possible, to see how users respond to each design and what problems might arise with other stakeholders. With UI prototyping, these iterations can be faster and issues can arise early on, rather than focusing on small details that could dramatically change later on in production. With UI prototyping, the limitations of the design software can force its users to think about the bigger picture than focus on time-consuming matters. For every team and workforce, the choice of software is different and in some cases one kind will be more fitting than another.
