To Fly Bar or Not To Fly Bar |

For many RC enthusiasts the decision between having a fly bar or going with a flybarless system on their shiny new RC helicopter is a simple decision. However for all the amateurs, myself included, it can pose a problem. And I think I may have found a proper conclusion in the middle of all the internet discussion boards. There seem to be a couple of main differences between the two options; the most basic aspect is mechanical. Flybarless systems are electronic and replace the mechanism that is added on to the helicopter head. Now this may seem like a “so what” statement to many RC heli beginners , but there is a difference! For one when crashing, which happens a lot in my experiences, the fly bar mechanism can be damaged a lot easier than an electronic system, getting tangled up in the rest of the head components. But that is just a small annoyance and in the end probably doesn’t distinguish the two very much. The main thing that seemed to differentiate the systems was functionality. A mechanical flybar was initially used in the first real helicopters in attempt to balance the heli out against unwarranted movements based on wind or other factors that aren’t the pilot. This however ended up restricting some of the movements that the pilot wanted. So the flybarless system was developed. The electronic system is able to differentiate between user initiated movements and movements from outside sources and balance out only the unwarranted movements. This allows for a much steadier flight and even the ability to do more fantastic maneuvers ! And which RC heli pilot isn’t concerned with having the ability to pull off more stunts? In the end it seems like flybarless helis are the way of the future. The increased ease of use is just too difficult to overlook when comparing these helis to ones with a flybar. I’ve seen it said that the tracking is much easier in a flybarless system, which lets you start planning out the next amazing trick you will pull off instead of hoping you won’t run into the tree ten yards to your right. So from my perspective, amateurs should never try anything other than a flybarless system, it outshines its competition.
