Among the places to visit in Port Blair, many are must see like the Little Andaman Island (one of the largest islands in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands that are open to the public), Madhuban (National Park fit for trekking and watching birds and animals) Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park ( a massive marine National Park), Long Island (ideal camping site, fit for stay for a couple of days), Jawra reserve (generally off limits, but Cable cars are available), Chidiya Tapu ( also called Bird Island, it is a small Village), Smith Island (twin of Rose Island, ideal for camping and exploration), Chattam Saw Mill, Marina Park and Aquarium, Mini Zoo (with rarest species like Nicobar pigeon, the Andaman pig and the Andaman gecko) and the Andaman Water Sports Complex (a theme Park) among others. Port Blair is not only the largest city in the Andaman and Nicobar Island cluster, but also the capital of that union territory. Located along the eastern coast of Southern Andaman Island, Port Blair serves as the main gateway to enter the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. At present it is also one of the significant bases of the Indian Navy as well as the Indian Coast Guard. But, it was an important destination during the British rule of India. In those times, the Chatham Island was set up as a centre of detention of political prisoners and freedom fighters from mainland India. It was later named Port Blair in honour of a lieutenant of the British Army. As the freedom movement garnered strength, more and more prisoners were sent to this island by the East India Company. As the number of detainees increased, and the unfavourable conditions and diseases prevailing in the area also increased, it resulted in many deaths and soon the island prison was renovated. During the second half of the 19th century, the Cellular Jail (which was termed by the Indians as Kaala Paani) was introduced for putting the prisoners. It became of the most infamous jails of the country since then due to its geographical positioning as well as the living conditions that prevailed there. Before Indian independence, Port Blair had served as the headquarters of the Azad Hind Fauj formed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, albeit temporarily. Apart from the cellular jail, there are numerous tourist places to Visit in Port Blair, both historical and otherwise. Some of these places are easily accessible, while some are not freely accessible. In fact, a few islands around Port Blair are not at all open for tourists. Forest Museum, Anthropological Museum, Sippighat Farm and Collinpur are some more interesting places to visit in Port Blair. For More Info: Places to Visit in Port Blair and Port Blair Hotels
