Be sure to pick a studio that advocates the traditional method of teaching, as this discipline is the backbone of all branches of dance • Ballet introduces your child to some of the best music ever written, starting with simple classic nursery rhyme melodies and running through to more complex pieces written by some of history’s greatest composers both ancient and modern • Your child will learn poise, grace, stance and elegance of movement; all of which will come about through learning the many traditional techniques of ballet, skills which will have an important effect on many aspects of your child’s future life • Ballet will help your child to become self-disciplined, as to succeed in this art a considerable amount of practice will be needed to master the physical challenges imposed by this ancient art • A positive self-image will be generated as your child progresses and succeeds with examinations which are held each year to gauge the student’s progress. It is very rare that a child should fail, in fact most students are encouraged to strive for a distinction grade, this being the highest level of achievement and a great boost to the child’s morale! • Students usually have the opportunity to demonstrate their prowess to the world (albeit local) at an of year concert, with dance items and sometimes a pantomime specially choreographed for the event Students do wear specialty clothing for classes, comprising usually of designed leotards and tights. Leotards should be comfortable, not so tight as to limit movement, but without gaping around the legs. It is most important to wear correctly fitting ballet shoes, called pointes, as there is some pressure on the feet and the right ballet shoe will give some support. It is most important that they fit the foot like a glove, neither too tight nor too loose.
