A kitchen island work area featuring a sink requires a sturdy cabinet. The cabinet will support the weight of a countertop, sink and other components. Build the cabinet to match other nearby cabinets or design it as a hybrid cabinet. For example, the island cabinet might be painted versus instead of having a wood finish like the rest of the kitchen cabinets. Above all, design an island cabinet that future homeowners would likely find appealing. Instructions as follows: Firstly, review kitchen design books and kitchen resource websites to see what's in style concerning cabinets. Sketch an island cabinet with sink placement, plus doors and drawers for plenty of storage. Measure the kitchen and devise a final size for the island on graph paper. Allow for a kick area of four inches of toe space under each side, so it will be easier to work around the island. Secondly, build the island cabinet at least 36 inches high, including the thickness of counter space material. Buy a cabinet base from a kitchen catalog or build one from scratch. Buy pre-made doors to add to a handmade cabinet. Install framework secured to floor joists to build the island. Cover with 3/4-inch plywood secured to the framing with 3-inch stainless steel screws. Use bead board, tiles or wood veneer to cover the plywood. Consider special painting or staining techniques with an artistic flair, if rough wood or plank decking is used. Thirdly, make the island, whether handmade or pre-made, visually appealing. Change the basic design by adding interesting materials, shelving, metal trim of copper or hand painted marble tiles, for example. Install a second level for an eating bar with stools on two sides of the cabinet. Devise storage alternatives such as opening one side of the island to install shelves that will hold visible storage baskets. Fourthly, use hardware and hinges to match other hardware in your kitchen. Don't alter the color, for example, from stainless steel on other cabinets to bronze on the island. Create visual interest and contrast by installing larger hinges or period hardware. Use paint or stain on the island that coordinates with other pieces in the room, however. Paint the cabinet in cream colored paint with light green trim, for instance, but use these two colors on other door fronts or a sideboard in the kitchen. Fifthly, don't build or buy counter top material until you've selected the sink to install. Create the counter space around the sink design and have the sink opening cut if using solid counter top material. Decide on a way to route water pipes to the sink from a nearby area. Investigate a practical way to run a drain line as well. Place real tile or granite tile on the island in a color that matches other kitchen counter tops. Avoid using a contrasting color for the island countertop to keep the island from looking like an afterthought.
