A ceramic tile floor is a beautiful decorating choice, and installing these tiles is a common do-it-yourself project. If you're replacing any cracked tiles, you'll have to first remove the existing tile for this project. Assuming you have linoleum on an existing floor, laying your tile directly over it can save you time and money. However, if your linoleum is covering a wood subfloor, it is in your best interest to remove the linoleum first as well as the soft luan, or mahogany plywood underlay, beneath it before installing your slate tile to prevent buckling and cracking due to the flexible subfloor. If your existing linoleum is covering a concrete slab, laying ceramic tile directly over it is perfectly acceptable. Instructions as follows: Firstly, take off all existing trim around edges of flooring, including baseboards and edging strips. Remove any bathroom fixtures such as toilets. Secondly, clean the existing flooring completely. Do not sand or rough up existing linoleum because many older types contain asbestos that can cause lung damage when particles are released into the air. Thirdly, lay a sealant in any rooms where moisture may occur, such as bathroom and kitchens. Lay your tile on the bare surface before applying adhesives to make sure you have enough tiles. Precut any edge tiles or tiles that need to go around pipe fixtures, such as water inlets for toilets or cabinet fixtures. Use a wet saw to make full cuts for edge tiles, and a tile nipper to clip small notches in tiles for fitting the tiles around pipes or corner areas. Fourthly, pick up tiles and lay a coat of adhesive using a notched trowel so that the surface is grooved to provide suction. Starting at the center of the area, lay out your tile using spacers between each one for the appropriate grout space. Fifthly, immediately wipe away any adhesive that seeps up over the tile surface. Use a leveler and a mallet to pound in tiles several rows at a time to ensure an even surface. Sixthly, apply grout to the finished floor and work it in between the tiles with a grout float. Apply a bead of silicone caulking around any pipe fixtures. Reseat removed fixtures, and reinstall trims and edgings. Tips & Warnings There are some specific tools you will need that are a must when working with ceramic tile, such as a wet saw, which is a fairly expensive purchase. Check with your local home improvement store to find out if you can rent rather than purchase the more expensive tools to save you money on the project. Always allow adequate ventilation when tiling a room because the fumes from the adhesives can be toxic. Be aware that the adhesive fumes are also flammable.
