By Gabriella Souza The Virginian-Pilot May 18, 2012 The man who headed the Cape Hatteras National Seashore while newcontroversial beach-access rules were formulated, and who was incharge of two other national parks, has announced he will retire atthe end of July. Superintendent Mike Murray has been at his post for more than sixyears, overseeing the seashore, the Wright Brothers NationalMonument and the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. He has workedwith the park service for 34 years. Murray was out of the office Thursday and could not be reached forcomment. In an email to his staff, he wrote that he appreciated their hardwork and dedication. "We have accomplished a great dealtogether," he wrote. Murray came to the Outer Banks from Massachusetts' Cape CodNational Seashore in December 2005. He became immersed in the formation of rules intended to balancerecreation, including beach driving, with preservation of protectedspecies on Cape Hatteras. The resulting plan went into effect in February, closing parts ofthe seashore to beach driving and giving the park service theability to close other sections based on nesting habitats ofprotected shorebirds, like the piping plover and sea turtles. About18 of 65 miles of the seashores are open to driving, and another31.7 miles are open to pedestrians. The park service, meanwhile, isfacing a lawsuit brought by advocates of beach access. Jason Rylander, senior attorney for the Defenders of Wildlife, agroup that had sued the park service to get the rules to protectspecies, said Murray should be commended for navigating complicatedissues and coming up with a plan that weighed both sides. "Igive him a lot of credit for the job he's done," he said. County Commissioner Allen Burrus said that although they could beon opposite ends on issues, Murray always acted professionally. "He was always someone who was available to talk to, arguewith and rant and rave at," Burrus said. "He kept hiscool at all times." Though the Cape Hatteras plan could overshadow Murray's legacy,Hatteras Island resident Danny Couch said people should know howsupportive Murray was of historic preservation, including theGraveyard of the Atlantic Museum. He said Murray always found a wayto be connected to locals. "You could actually have a conversation with him about historyand see that he was interested," Couch said.
