Installing stone veneer on a block wall can add thousands of dollars of value to your home, and can turn an ugly block wall into a thing of beauty. Adding stone veneer to a block wall can be accomplished in a single day, providing the block wall is not too large. Stone veneer can easily be cut with most types of saws, as long as you install a masonry blade. Many people like to lay out their veneer pieces ahead of time so they can cut pieces to fit in odd spots in advance. Other people lay up a stone wall and then cut their smaller fill-in pieces as they go. Some people prefer to add colorant to their grout in order to blend the color of their grout to match the color of their stone veneer. But whatever you'll choose to do, here are the basic steps you'll need to take in order to install stone veneer on a block wall. Instructions as follows: Firstly, sand blast your slate block wall if has been painted or previously treated. All paint must be removed completely. If the block has not been painted or treated, skip this step. Secondly, mix a bag of mortar with water as per the manufacturer's instructions. Add 2 cups of Thin Set to your mortar mix so your mix will be easier to work with on a vertical surface. Mist your block wall so that the wall will not draw the moisture out of the mortar mix too quickly. Now spread a very thin coating of mortar mix over your block wall. The primary purpose of this step is to fill in the grout lines of your block wall. Keep your mortar level but do not smooth it. If the surface seems too smooth use a springy-tine leaf rake or anoother instrument to scratch the surface. Because this is such a thin scratch coat, it should dry in under 2 hours. Thirdly, mist your wall lightly. Butter the back of each piece of veneer as you add them to the wall using the same mortar/Thin Set mixture that you used for your scratch coat. Put up to 1/4 inch of mortar on the back of each piece of veneer. Starting at the bottom of the wall, press your veneer against your block wall and wiggle it slightly until it feels as if it is firmly in place. Mortar should squeeze out of the edges of the veneer. Keep a damp rag handy to wipe any excess mortar off of the veneer surface immediately. Fourthly, cut veneer as necessary to fill in odd-sized spots as you work up your wall. Try to keep pieces snugly-fitting as thin grout lines are considered preferable to thick lines. When placing cut pieces of veneer into your wall place the cut edge on the bottom if the pieces is fitted below eye level on the wall, and place the cut edge toward the top if the pieces is being set above eye level. Use your putty knife to keep grout lines clean of the excess mortar than is pressed out when pieces are set onto the wall. Fifthly, mix your grout as per the supplier or manufacturer's instructions. Add colorant, if desired. If the grout mixture is too thin (i.e. comes out of your grout bag too easily) add sand or a small amount of mortar mix. If the grout is too thick to come out of your grout bag add water sparingly until the mixture is just right. Use your putty knife to keep grout lines smooth and uniform.
