An enchanting island paradise full of breathtaking natural beauty, Sri Lanka also boasts a rich cultural heritage that is very much entwined with the lives, beliefs and traditions of the people. Those exploring this island nation have much to see and do including discovering its Buddhist heritage that can be witnessed in almost every part of Sri Lanka. This is particularly true when visiting the North Central Province and such locations as Polonnaruwa which is a popular tourist destination. Those looking to head off the beaten path however, and embark on an unforgettable outdoor adventure should definitely plan to visit the Somawathie Chaitiya Sanctuary. Situated within the picturesque Somawathie natural reserve and wildlife sanctuary, this historic site dates back to the 2nd century BC. Also known as the Somawathiya Chethiya, it stands on the Mahaveli River bank and provides a fascinating insight into the country's Buddhist heritage. Located around 40 kms from Minneriya and Polonnaruwa, the traditionally white temple structure is believed to enshrine the right tooth relic of Lord Buddha. To reach the Somawathie Chaitiya Sanctuary you will have to drive through the nature reserve and those travelling during the early hours of the day or when dusk is settling in, have a chance to see wild elephants. The temple is believed to have been built for Princess Somawathie by her husband, Prince Giri-aba. It was after its competition that the sacred tooth relic, presented by Maha Thera Mahinda, was enshrined in the specially constructed chamber of the stupa. The site of the Somawathie Chaitiya has led archaeologists to several enthralling findings including ancient carvings, old buildings and stone inscriptions. Four inscriptions can be found at the nearby Eric Swan Rock. As you wander around the site steeped in history and surrounded by the exotic wilds of Sri Lanka, it is easy to get lost in thought and wonderment.
