Yes, you will have a richer, warmer, more mature sound when you discover your ‘real’ voice. And, yes, you will be able to increase your volume without shouting when you discover your ‘real’ voice. But there is something else you should consider if public speaking is your goal. The likelihood of suffering vocal abuse is much greater if you plan to pursue a career as a professional speaker. One of the best examples of vocal abuse and public speaking is Anthony Robbins. His voice has suffered so much damage that he has botox injections in order to be able to talk. I admire this man’s speaking style and his message; however, it greatly saddens me that he did not seek good voice training before the damage was done. Had Tony Robbins learned to use his chest as his primary sounding board early in his career, instead of pushing all his sound from his throat and voice box, his vocal situation would not be critical. - It is important to understand that your speaking voice is the vehicle for your message. If you believe your message is of value, then you must have a voice to relay your words.
Vocal abuse is something that not only impedes speaking for great lengths of time but it also changes the quality of your voice. Hillary Clinton is a prime example of serious vocal abuse. For two years, she campaigned hard and did a lot of yelling in order to be heard. Had she known how to project her voice, she would have much more power with her voice today. I rather doubt she can raise her voice anymore (and for that I am confident Bill is very happy). In addition, if you listen to her talk, her vocal range has become limited. Vocal abuse also takes a toll on your energy level. Pushing the voice from the throat takes a lot more work than using your chest cavity to power your sound. What this means is that when you use your chest, you will not only have more voice by the end of the day but you will also have more energy. Changing how you place your voice also has another wonderful benefit: you will discover the best means of controlling your nervousness in any form of public speaking. Yes, I want you nervous but I want you in control of that marvelous rush of adrenaline instead of the other way around.
