Marble is an elegant and sophisticated option for interior flooring if you have the space in your budget to invest. Marble is regarded as a durable flooring option with a long lifetime, but the porous limestone is not impervious to damage and can become stained, chipped and cracked. Proper care of your marble floors is important for avoiding breakage, but repairing marble is an option in the event of an accident. Types of Breakage The porous surface of marble makes the floors particularly susceptible to stains from common household liquids like juice or detergents. Though stains are unsightly, more serious damage such as cracked corners or chips along the tile surface also are problematic. Marble is a hard natural garden stone, but if your subfloor is uneven, the unequal distribution of pressure can cause the tiles to split or crack. Smaller chips in marble floors are typically caused by dropping heavy objects, furniture or appliances onto the marble surface. Prevention Preventing damage to your marble floors starts with proper installation. To prevent cracks, ensure that your subflooring material is completely level. Once the floor is installed, marble should be sealed to create a barrier that protects the porous surface. Water-based topical sealants create a thin protective film along the surface of the marble, while impregnators penetrate the marble for a stain-resistant seal that requires fewer reapplications than topical sealants. Routine maintenance includes wiping up spills immediately to avoid stains, cleaning with soft water and a neutral pH soap or detergent and regular polishing to smooth the surface and promote shine. Do-it-Yourself Repairs Small chips or stains in your marble can be repaired without the help of a professional. Surface scratches can be sanded down and then polished to restore shine to the marble. Begin sanding with a course sandpaper and move to progressively finer sheets until the scratches are removed. Marble polishing slurry restores the initial luster of the tile. If your marble is stained or discolored, polishing powders restore uniform color to the tiles and a wax spray protects the marble tiles from future stains or damage. Professional Repairs Large chips and deep cracks are best handled by professional contractors with expertise in repairing marble. If several of your tiles are cracked, a contractor may recommend removing the tile and relaying the subfloor to prevent future damage, a process that is costly and time-consuming. If large cracks and chips occur in just a few tiles, a professional will repair or replace the single tile. Repairs typically involve securing the sections together with marble cement and clamping the pieces together to ensure a tight, even seal. For large chips, marble dust and resin form a paste that fills the chip and hardens to resemble real marble.
