The theatrics opened the night, with characters known as Dreamersrunning around dressed in shimmering silver pyjamas launching theinflatable Agitos, the three-crescent symbol of the ParalympicGames. The antagonists, Wind Gremlins, rode in on customised motorbikeswith giant fans mounted on them, separating the Agitos. It grew and floated to the left of the centrepiece - a stage in themiddle of Olympic Stadium with a giant sundial mounted on it. The premise followed the theme of seasons, rolling through all fourin one night, like a party in Melbourne. There was no waiting for the 4200 athletes - their job was done, with either success celebrated or disappointment lamented - andthey entered the arena pre-show. Servicemen and women were then honoured by the raising of the UnionFlag by Captain Luke Sinnott, who lost both his legs and an armwhen he received the full force of an IED blast while serving inAfghanistan two years ago. Sinnott scaled a pole to the right of the sundial by hand to mountas blind and autistic singer Lissa Hermans belted out the Britishnational anthem. Another wounded serviceman, Rory Mackenzie, walked to the top ofthe Sundial Stage to deliver a monologue on peace and unity as 164flag escorts, representing all the nations at the Games, marchedinto the arena, forming a heart in the centre of the stadium. Then it was scorched into the ground. The iconic symbol of love was forever marked in the turf toColdplay's Life in Technicolor . Mackenzie's proclamation of, "Let the Games begin",welcomed a procession of giant, steel machines shaped as everythingfrom fish to grasshoppers, rocket cars to fantasy Roof Roll Forming Machine. The supporting cast - looking like something out of Lord of the Rings - marched around them, twirling flames and dancing to a tribaldrumbeat with rising synths. Athletes were praised, International Paralympic Committee Athletes'council members were welcomed and the volunteers were thanked. Then the lights dimmed. And they arrived. The first chords of the aptly titled Us Against The World werestruck and Chris Martin led Coldplay through their opening track asthe fantasy characters surrounded the Sundial, swaying to thelyricsof Slow it Down . The stadium was bathed in amber from the triangular light towersbowing from the rooftop of the arena, while lights imitatedswirling flames dancing across the seating of the 80,000 spectatorsto the group's second hit Yellow and the poignant message of"Look how they shine for you". The ceremony's title - Festival of Flames - was then honoured bythe tune, Up in Flames , before one of the group's greatest hits and also one of the Gamesreceived a rowdy reception. The progression of Paradise had become a mainstay of theParalympics, getting airtime repeatedly at most venues. This time it was different. Acrobats dubbed Fireflies, 19 of them, glided down from the roof ofthe stadium, swinging through hoops with light bulbs floating abovelike balloons and climaxing with pulses and spiraling sparks. Autumn was gone. Winter was welcomed by a green and blue light show and confettiimmitating snow tumbling from the sky to the tunes, such as God Put A Smile Across Your Face , as technicolour lighting skipped erratically around the stadiumand dancers twirled glowsticks. Charlie Brown , the third single off Coldplay's latest album Mylo Xyloto , was played before drummers echoed their booms around the stadiumand five-time Grammy winner Rihanna entered on a fantasy steamboat, dressed in a flowing orange gown and singing a duet of Princess of China with Martin. Summer was introduced with the British Paraorchestra, a 17 piecegroup of performers with a disability, as it collaborated withColdplay's Strawberry Swing . Dancers filled the minor stage where the British and Paralympicflags were hoisted and Rihanna drifted down from above on asuspended swing-seat singing her hit We Found Love. Other characters took to the sky on carousel-style horses and thenthe most iconic song of the night came alive. Dancers bounced to the four-chord pulsing strings and base ofGrammy-winning Viva La Vida , Coldplay's 2009 Song of the Year. Spiralling sparks blazed alight on the ground, giant confetticannons fired a constant stream into the air around the Sundial asSummer reached its crescendo and the crowd joined in as the musichalted and Martin continued the song's chanted chorus. Coldplay took a break, the British Paraorchestra took over, and theParalympic flag was lowered and handed to London's eccentric MayorBoris Johnson. The handback to IPC president Philip Craven was completed, beforethe handover to Rio de Janiero Mayor Eduado Paes was made, entrusting Brazil with the 2016 Paralympic Games. Dancers with a disability and able bodies alike went toe-to-toe ina samba dance-off in a style called "batalha dopassinho"; a mixture of hip hop freestyle and samba dancing. British athletes, amputee sprinter Johnnie Peacock and diminutiveswimmer Ellie Simmonds, who won five medals between them, thenextinguished the Paralympic Flame as the steel stems of theflower-like cauldron unfurled. Hundreds of flame-torches were then carried into the stadium - thensilence. "Feel it comin' in the air / And the screams from everywhere /I'm addicted to the thrill / It's a dangerous love affair,"Rihanna blazed alive the opening chorus to Jay-Z's Run This Town . Coldplay supported with the backing music and the thousands of LEDlights attached to the seating flashed vividly around the stadium. The acts then combined, as Colplay brought Paradise back with Jay-Z's flows replacing the verse lyrics and Rihannahelping out on the chorus. The night was coming to a close and helping ease into the end wasthe emotional ballad of Coldplay's The Scientist . Bands of aqua light bathed and waved across the stadium as clips ofthe Games athletes were replayed in slow motion to the lyrics,"Nobody said it was easy, no one ever said it would be thishard. Let's take it back to the start". South African 'Oscar Pistorius and hometown hero David Weirreceived ear-busting applause as their performances were shown onthe four giant screens mounted to the roof of the arena. Martin gave a final farewell to London's Games and launched into Every Drop Is A Waterfall . Fountains of water fired into the air to symbolise the finalextinguishing of the Paralympic Flame, athletes joined theproduction cast and volunteers dancing around the central stage andone final rally of fireworks exploded. The screens lit up with the fireworks shooting off along the RiverThames and from the Agitos logo hanging from Tower Bridge. Then the closing image of the night was projected on the screens, the Houses of Parliament, with the message: "Thank you London, thank you UK". Thank you, indeed.
