As you know stun guns are battery-powered, hand-held self-defense devices that are meant to protect you and deliver a strong electric shock. The word "gun" does not describe the device in a traditional meaning of the word since a stun gun does not shoot anything and it is a melee weapon. In order to make the device do its function properly you need to put the device's prongs against the attacker's body and then fire the trigger in order to send the electrical current their way. Do not separate from the attacker right away and instead make sure that the shock lasted several seconds, otherwise it will not be effective. The electrical current of a stun gun device can pass through several layers of clothing and deliver its full power. The electricity cannot bounce back to you in any way so do not be afraid of holding the device against the attacker's body for a longer period of time (between 3 to 5 seconds). How Does a Stun Gun Affect the Body? The next logical question is how does the electrical current from such a small device help immobilize the target? A device that is powered by batteries cannot produce a lethal electrical current and the number of mili amps a stun guns can produce is very small. What is very high, however, is the voltage. A stun gun device can have several million volts and this helps it perform its function. The pulsating current will cause the muscles to work extremely fast so that they are depleted of all their energy and then it will also cause an interruption in the signals that the brain sends to the body. This can last up to 30 minutes but cases have shown that aggressive attackers will be up on their feet in just a minute or two, so you should use this window of opportunity to get to safety right away. How Long Should the Electrical Shock Last? Generally speaking, a shock that lasts as second or less is more of a warning shot. It will cause a shock, startle the attacker and probably cause some pain and muscle spasm. If the shock lasts between one to two seconds the attacker will enter a dazed state and experience some major muscle spasm but might still be able to harm you. Three or more seconds is where the full effectiveness of the stun guns starts as the attacker will start to lose control and balance as well as experience major muscle spasms throughout their whole body.
