There are a number of popular materials that homeowners use for driveways including concrete, asphalt andgravel. The least expensive of the three is gravel. It is also the easiest to install and require the least amount of maintenance. Gravel is popular in rural settings but many people find it less attractive that some alternative materials, and it may not pass the muster of some neighborhood covenants. Types Technically, gravel is any batch of loose rock that is between 2 and 63 millimeters at its largest dimension. For paving a driveway, the individual rocks should be in the 10 to 20 millimeter range. Gravel comes in as many different varieties as there are rocks and may include some other matter such as crushed seashells. Most communities have access to a quarry that crushes local stone for gravel. This local limestone may be available for delivery or cash and carry. Features Crushed gravel driveways do not require the same level of maintenance and repair as other driveway materials because there is no need to seal or clean gravel, and it doesn't crack. However, gravel tends to embed itself into the substrate, which results in ruts that have to be filled in occasionally. Proper drainage is necessary to promote rain water runoff. A certain amount of silt and clay in the gravel will act as a binder to help keep the rocks together. Benefits Gravel driveways do not require the same level of planning to install as the other major types of driveway materials. Beyond measuring the length and width of the driveway area and making sure you have adequate drainage, there is very little preparation that needs to be done before laying the gravel for your driveway. Once the gravel is in place and has been packed down, it requires only periodic "topping off" to maintain its efficacy. Considerations Gravel driveways can be less attractive than driveways made from other types of surfacing materials. If not packed down properly or bonded with the proper amount of silt and clay, the gravel can scatter into your yard or street. Gravel driveways tend to be dirtier than other types. Because there is no level surface, removing snow can be more difficult. During rainy weather gravel can sink into the ground, resulting in ruts. Composition The best gravel driveways are composed of four layers. The first layer should be specially designed driveway fabric that allows water to pass through but keeps the silt and clay in place. The second layer should be rocks that are larger than gravel. The third layer should be crushed gravel with angular sides. Compact the gravel with a roller, or simply drive over it. The fourth layer should be smaller gravel. Compact the final layer with a mechanical roller or drive over it with your car until it is firmly seated.
