When a granite slab countertop is too expensive or hard to procure, a granite tile countertop can be a great alternative. When tiling a countertop, the edge, or face, of the counter requires special consideration to create a finished appearance and fully cover the material beneath the tile. Since granite tiles are not available in v-tiles or traditional counter edges, homeowners need to make a choice in how they'd like to edge their granite tile countertop. Instructions as follows: Firstly, install the top of the granite countertop to the edge of the material beneath it. Measure the thickness of the counter and cut additional granite tiles to strips that are the same width as the tiles installed on the top of the counter and the height of the front of the counter. Secondly, change the blade of a tile wet saw to a bullnose blade. Line up one edge of the precut granite pieces so that the edge will fit into the groove on the side of the bullnosing blade. Push the granite tile into the blade and move it back and forth so that the bullnosing blade will remove the bulk of the tile's edge and round it over. Thirdly, use an angle grinder fitted with a polishing pad to put a high shine on the edge of the tile. Move the grinder continuously over the top and along the edge of the tile; do not hold the grinder in one place as this may etch the stone. Fourthly, install the finished edge tiles with the bullnose edge at the top of the counter and rounding in toward the granite tiles already installed by spreading a thin layer of thinset along the face with a trowel. This will create a rounded, finished edge and hide the cut edge of the foremost piece of granite on the top of the counter. Fifthly, grout the face tiles along with the tiles on the top of the counter, packing the grout into the joints with a grout float. Place a bead of color-matched caulk between the edge tiles and the tiles on the top of the counter to help the tiles to flex. Sixthly, purchase wood moldings in a style that complements the rest of the woodwork in the room. Paint or stain the moldings to match the cabinet. Seventhly, cut the moldings with a saw to the desired height of the counter's face, so that the top, finished edge of the molding will cover the edge of the granite tiles. Eighthly, nail the moldings to the face of the counter, using one nail per linear foot to create a tight hold.
