Arthritis is a joint disorder disease. Arthritis in the knee is a form of arthritis that specifically affects the knee. The most popular type of knee arthritis is known as Osteoarthritis and it is a condition in which the knee joint cartilage wears away gradually. Rheumatoid arthritis is another type of arthritis which is inflammatory and can damage the knee joint cartilage. We also have Post-traumatic arthritis which develops after the knee has had an injury. Typically, arthritis of the knee affect people above the age of fifty, but Rheumatoid arthritis may occur at earlier age, most commonly in people with body overweight. The condition may arise as a result of several causes which include: genetic factor, knee trauma may also lead to development of the condition, meniscus tears, and bone fracture around or near the knee joint. The symptoms of this condition are progressive as time goes but this is not the case always because the symptoms may change with change in weather which imply that in analyzing these symptoms, the weather condition should be taken into consideration. The symptoms are: Pain during normal activities Knee becomes stiff. Joint swelling Joint deformity such bow-legs. Reduced range of movement Once these symptoms have been noted, it is important to seek a doctor's attention. There are tests available to confirm infections which include: fluid test, and antibody test. These lab tests help the doctor determine how your condition has progressed. It is important to note that the earlier you know your conditions state or level the better. Basically, treatment for the knee arthritis condition is dependent on the person being treated. This means that there are several techniques that can be applied in treating a knee arthritis patient. Generally treatment is supposed to start with the steps that are most basic and advance to more involve once and maybe include surgery. The available treatment techniques are: Weight loss- this treatment is effective in reducing the pain at the affected knee joint. Modification of activities- involves reduction of some activities and learns other kinds of activities that are good for the patient. Anti-inflammatory medications- these are drugs that help ease pain and also reduce inflammation. Synvisc- helps ease pain for patient and in return but time before surgery. Cortisone injections- this treatment help reduce inflammation and pain at the knee joint. Joint supplements- even though research to supplements is limited, it appears that Glucosamine is safe and effective towards treatment of the condition. Knee osteotomy- in most cases, this technique is effective on young people. Total knee replacement- involves the removal of the cartilage and replacing it with a plastic and metal implant. Partial replacement surgery- involves replacement of some part of the affected knee. Walking aids- with the help of a single crutch or cane in the arm on the opposite side of the knee that has been affected, reduce the burden on the affected joint. Physical therapy-involves strengthening of muscles near the joint of the knee with the aim of helping ease the burden placed upon the knee. Treatment should start as early as possible. This will mean less damage of the joint and obviously reduced pain caused by arthritis in the knee.
