Symptoms of Dyslexia

Business
The most common symptom of the disorder known as dyslexia is the reversal of letters, both in writing and reading. Much more complicated than a simple vision disorder, dyslexia is a learning disability that makes it difficult to embrace and comprehend letters, symbols and concepts by traditional classroom methods. Most importantly, it is also not an accurate gauge of intelligence, as dyslexia appears across the board in all intellectual levels.

Symptoms of this complicated disease include: Letter, number, and symbol reversal, or mirror writing Unusually early or late development with regard to crawling, walking, and talking Difficulty rhyming words Very poor spelling with omission and/or addition of letters Difficulty recognizing syllables, separating and blending sounds Difficulty in memorization tasks Reading and writing levels inconsistent with IQ Difficulty with sequencing Difficulty learning foreign languages and concepts related to symbols Difficulty summarizing reading passages Confusing left and right, over and under Withdrawal and depression, or disruptive actions that gain attention Loss of interest in school-related activities

Through functional MRIs and PET scans, it has been discovered that the brains of individuals with dyslexia show different physical anatomy than those of normal individuals. Portions of the left hemisphere of the brain involved in reading and language, as well as visual and short-term memory, present small, cortical malformations that occurred in latter trimesters of fetal development. Dyslexia tends to run in families, and also finds more males with the disorder than females.

Dyslexic individuals often seem bright, articulate and intelligent, but tend to have reading, writing and spelling abilities that appear inconsistently slow. Dyslexic individuals therefore do not perform well on traditional academic tests that require the use of those skills. As a result, dyslexic students may take on monikers labeling them as dumb, lazy, or unmotivated, when, in actuality, their internal frustration, concern, and disappointment with their own abilities remains hidden.

Symptoms in previously undiagnosed adults include: Time management issues Restlessness Inability to focus and concentrate Reduced reading speed Faulty recall and memory skills Failure to comprehend reading material Preference for digital watches Above average hearing, observance of visual details and talented arts performance often accompany dyslexia, further confusing the issue about whether an individual is struggling with a learning disability or just not working hard enough. It is estimated that between five and ten percent of the global population suffers from dyslexia. Fortunately, many schools are now equipped to detect, diagnose and work with students to send them on to perform reading and cognitive operations that earn high acclaim.

Daydreamers with active imaginations and much to say, but without the accompanying verbal and written tools to say it properly, dyslexic individuals can meet, and often exceed, initial goals set for them upon diagnosis. Once a learning style is introduced that clicks, dyslexic students often become voracious readers that end up pursuing incredible careers.

When combined with a professional vision therapy program from a qualified physician, such as Dr. Tod Davis, Developmental Optometrist, of Developmental Optometry & Vision Therapy Services, success is within reach. Dr. Davis has been developing vision therapy programs for patients with vision disorders throughout the eastern Virginia region for over 25 years, and is eager to help your children.
