Granite is a strong and durable material for kitchen countertops. Installing a granite slab can be expensive, but you can cut down on the cost by installing granite tile instead. The tile offers the same level of durability as the slab of granite, but is easier to install for a do-it-yourself home owner. Installing granite tile is a job you can complete in one day. Instructions as follows: Firstly, hold the level against the countertop frame along both the length and the width. Make sure the frame is level. If it is crooked, the counter you install will also be crooked. Secondly, measure the length and width of the countertop. Cut the 3/4 inch plywood with the circular saw to fit this measurement. If you want the countertop to have an overhang, measure those pieces separately and cut them separately with the circular saw. Most overhangs are one to two inches wide. Thirdly, lay the plywood substrate on top of the countertop frame. Use the measuring tape to measure the width of the countertop frame and mark that measurement on the top of the plywood with a pencil. This is where the plywood meets the frame. Use the drill to insert screws through the plywood and into the frame, inserting one screw every six inches to secure the plywood. Put the overhang pieces in place along the edge of the counter and screw them into place as well. Fourthly, use the carbide-tipped scorer to score the cement backer board to fit the same measurements as the plywood and the overhang. Once the backer board has the score marks, you can break off the excess with your hands. Lower the backer board onto the plywood. Fifthly, use the drill to countersink screws every six inches into the backer board. Place the overhang pieces flush with the backer board and secure the pieces to the plywood with the screws in the same way. Apply a strip of mesh tape to any joints in the cement backer board. Sixthly, pour the thinset travertine tile adhesive mix into the 5-gallon bucket. Add water according to the package's directions. Use a notched trowel to apply a thin layer of the adhesive along the edge of the countertop. Lower the first tile onto the adhesive, leaving a 1/4 inch edge hanging off of the edge of the countertop. This is known as the overhang. Lay the second tile even against the side of the first, and repeat across the length of the entire countertop. Seventhly, apply another strip of adhesive with the notched trowel. Lay the tiles in the same fashion as above, leaving a 1/4 inch overhang over any edges. Continue until you cover the entire counter with granite tile. If you need to cut any tiles to make them fit against a wall, you can rent a tile saw from a local hardware store. Eighthly, use the trowel to apply adhesive to the overhang pieces of backer board. Place the edging tiles firmly into the adhesive. Apply a strip of mesh tape every six inches to hold the tiles in place until the adhesive is dry. Ninthly, mix a package of unsanded tile grout according to the package directions. Use a grout float with a rubber edge to apply the grout to the seams between the tiles. Use a damp sponge to remove any excess grout that gets on the tile faces. Let the grout and mortar dry overnight.
