Merger and acquisition (M&A) activities in Vietnam increasedsharply by 135 percent in 2011, totaling a record 4.7 billion U.S.dollars, in which over 2.6 billion U.S. dollars involved foreigninvestors, said Nguyen Anh Tuan, head of M&A Vietnam Forum 2012organizing board. Tuan made the remarks in a press conference held recently incapital Hanoi to announce the Fourth M&A Vietnam Forum, whichwill take place in Vietnam's southern Ho Chi Minh City, some 1,130km south of Hanoi, on June 7. In the first quarter of this year, the total value of M&A dealsin Vietnam reached 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, ranked eighth amongnations which witnessed the busiest M&A activities in the Asia-Pacific region, said Tuan, adding that the total M&A value ofthe region, excluding Japan, reached 92.4 billion U.S. dollars. In term of deal quantity, local firms involved in 77 percent oflast year's transactions, proving the activities were busy amongdomestic players despite their small values. In term of deal value, foreign investors represented 66 percent,showing that they tended to buy quality companies in Vietnam. Amongthose investors, Japan led foreign countries whose enterprises hadcarried out M&A activities in Vietnam. In 2011, Japan had 16 M&A deals with Vietnamese enterprises andthe figure is expected to double this year, said Tuan. M&A is expected to grow at over 30 percent a year with consumergoods, banking, finance and real estate forecast to continue to bethe most attractive sectors, Tuan said. Vietnam M&A Forum is an annual event on M&A and strategicbusiness alliance in Vietnam, which is co-organized by VietnamInvestment Review (VIR) and AVM Vietnam, with the support fromVietnam's Ministry of Planning and Investment. Since 2009, M&A forums have attracted more than 100 keynotespeakers and about 1,000 attendants, including leaders ofgovernmental agencies, CEOs of international and nationalenterprises and managers of investment funds.
