Bluestone gets its name from the distinctive color on the surface, often appearing a blue-gray or green-gray in sunlight. The material is dense and has fine grains; it is part of the sandstone family. The stones themselves often appear cracked or broken, providing a natural, rustic look to the floor of any patio application. These stones can last decades if properly installed and cared for, including regular cleaning procedures. Instructions as follows: Firstly, outline the shape of the patio floor with a hose or rope to show where you want the stones to lie. Secondly, lay out your bluestones within the patio area, leaving 1½ to 2½ inches between each stone, depending on your preference. Vary the exact shape and border lines of the stones as you work to fit your design idea. This will give you an idea of what the final product will look like and give you a chance to change any areas you don't like. Thirdly, cut stones as necessary to fit the pattern. Lay the stone face down and draw a chalk line where you want to cut. Don safety paving stone. Ninthly, fill in the excavated area with 3 inches of patio paver base and compact the area. Continue to add layers and compact until the paver base is 2½ inches below the desired height; remember that this will change as you move away from the house. Follow the designations you made with your strings to avoid building up too high. Tenthly, top the paver base with 1 inch of leveling sand covering the base material. This will bring the support areas 1½ inches below the top of the excavated area, which is the size of the bluestones. Eleventh, lay out the bluestones over the sand in the same pattern you made before. Remember that some areas will be slightly lower than others; this is needed for the drainage. If necessary, use a rubber mallet to tap the stones into place. Continue until the patio floor is completely laid out. Twelfth, spray off dirt and debris from the bluestone surface with a garden hose at least once a week and after each use, such as for a cookout. This will stop dirt and dust from being ingrained in the surface. Thirteenth, blot up any spills immediately with clean rags or paper towels to stop any liquid from seeping into the bluestone surface and causing stains. Fourteenth, mop the bluestone surface with acid-neutral garden stone cleaner, available from the bluestone's manufacturer or other stone supply retailers. This should be done once every two weeks to remove any built-up dirt or stains. Fifteenth, rinse the surface after mopping to remove residual cleaner.
