Dear friends, do you know how to install exterior slate tile in the daily life? As we know, exterior slate tile gives a beautiful finishing touch to an Italian or hacienda-themed patio garden. Once installed, exterior slate tile requires little maintenance. Sweep your tile patio with sand once a year and give it a light daily rinse with plain water when it appears dull or dusty. Exterior slate tile is resilient enough for poolside patios, spa decks, walkways and even hillside staircases. Instructions as follows: Firstly, determine the size and shape or your desired exterior slate tile patio. Purchase enough slate tile to cover the entire area, with as little space as possible between tiles. Decide whether to use finished, pre-cut square or hexagonal tiles or asymmetrical, unfinished tiles. Finished tile works best for a formal, Italian-themed patio garden. And unfinished tile works better for an informal, hacienda-style patio with an irregular shape. Secondly, establish the shape of your patio by digging it out at least 6 to 8 inches deep. For a formal patio, build a wooden patio form using 2-by-4 inch by 8 feet long lumber. Use black PVC landscape edging to outline irregular-shaped patios. Thirdly, pour a layer of pea gravel 3 to 4 inches thick in the entire patio form. Level it with a hoe or toothed rake. Roll the area with a water-filled lawn roller to compact the gravel. (Use the sand and gravel material calculator in the resources at the end of this article to determine how much sand and gravel you will need.) Fourthly, layer 3 inches of sand over the gravel. Roll the area again with a water-filled lawn roller to compact the sand. Use a long board across the patio form, with a level on it, to ensure that the patio foundation will be level. Scrape the board across the form to remove excess sand. Then roll the patio with the lawn roller again. Fifthly, lay pre-cut tiles on level patio form surface. Brush sand across the entire patio with a broom to fill in all the spaces between tiles. Roll the patio carefully with a water-filled lawn roller to ensure that it is level. Do not roll rough cut patio tiles, as it is not possible to completely level them. Tips & Warnings Install black PVC irrigation lines in patio form, on top of the sand layer, underneath the patio tiles. Do not use salt of any kind on your exterior slate tile patio, as it will speed erosion of your stones and cause the patio to buckle. Instead, cover the patio with a tarp in snowy weather.
