VATICAN CITY - The Vatican denied reports on Monday that an unnamedcardinal is suspected of being a leading mole behind leaks ofconfidential papal documents, but confirmed many people were beingquestioned. "There is no cardinal suspected. I utterly deny the reports,"Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told journalists followingrumours that an operation involving 20 or so whistleblowers wasbeing run by a cardinal. "In this phase there may be searches carried out and cardinalsquestioned, but this does not mean there is another person underinvestigation," Lombardi said, adding that "many people" were beingquestioned in a series of hearings. The comments came as the Vatican struggled to contain rumours inthe media about the so-called "Vatileaks" scandal, after PopeBenedict XVI's butler Paolo Gabriele was arrested last week andsecret papers were found in his home. "The real brains are the cardinals. Then there are the monsignors, secretaries and smaller fry," one source, who refused to be namedbut admitted to having leaked documents from the Vatican, told LaRepubblica. Gabriele, who has worked at the Vatican since 2006 and was one of aselect few with access to the pope's private quarters, was arresteda month after Benecict set up a special commission of cardinals toprobe the leaks. Several media outlets on Monday were quoting sources who saidGabriele was just one of around 20 whistleblowers who had beenleaking information. The documents, splashed in the Italian press and a book, have shedlight on many Vatican secrets, including the Church's tax problems, child sex scandals and negotiations with hardline traditionalistrebels. Although they do not reveal any great surprises, the secret papershave lifted the lid on deep-seated venom among rival figures in theVatican. Gabriele's arrest was greeted with disbelief as the 46-year-old wasknown for his papal devotion and loyalty and there has beenspeculation he was a simply a pawn in a game of intrigue andstruggle for power inside the Holy See. "Gabriele will collaborate widely... after we have had a chance tostudy the events which are under investigation," the butler'slawyer, Carlo Fusco, said in a statement released by the Vatican. According to the Vatican correspondent for La Stampa newspaper,Marco Tosatti, Gabriele "was a simple person, who would not havehad either the desire or the means" to organise a whistle-blowingoperation of this size. "There must have been someone important behind him" who would "havemade him believe that he would be helping Benedict" by leaking thedocuments, he said. Vatican expert Bruno Bartoloni said Gabriele was not just thepope's butler but had officially been promoted to become Benedict'sofficial secretary Georg Ganswein's right-hand man - giving himgreater access to secret documents. One source quoted by La Repubblica said the mole behind the leakshad acted in support of the pope "because the goal was to revealthe corruption within the Church over the past few years". "There are those who oppose Cardinal Secretary of State TarcisioBertone, those who think Benedict XVI is too weak to lead theChurch and those who think this is the right time to move forward,"the source said. The source also said the pope was deeply affected by the sackinglast week of Vatican Bank president Ettore Gotti Tedeschi followinga spate of financial scandals. "He (the pope) began to cry and then he became angry and vowed thatthe truth will come out," the source said. Gotti Tedeschi was ousted on Thursday after a no-confidence vote bythe board for allegedly failing to clean up the image of the bankand has also been named as a possible source of leaked documentsabout the institution.
