Inspired by a video footage showing some members of the Oxford University’s Dangerous Sports Club experimenting with elastic cords in the 1970’s, two young Kiwis, AJ Hackett and Henry Van Asch started the first commercial center for Bungee at Kawarau Bridge in 1988. This wasn’t before they worked with scientists from Auckland University to do extensive tests on safety standards. Bungee involves free falling from a height of anywhere between 35 and 134 meters, with a strong latex rubber cord secured around your ankles or a full body harness. AJ Hackett performed the first Bungee jump from the 43-meter high Kawarau Bridge in 1988. Since then every year thousands of tourists visit this site to get a whiff of what it’s like to bungee jump from the Bridge where it all began. You can choose to do a water touch bungee, jump in tandem with someone, or choose from one of the many other options available here. The Taupo Bungee, at a height of 47 meters above the Waikato River, is located five minutes away from Taupo town in North Island. It is the highest water touch Bungee site and you can even experience being “fully immersed” in the water. The Nevis Bungee, situated half an hour away from Queenstown, is the highest bungee in the Australasia region. It stands at a height of 134 meters above the Nevis River. Take in the spectacular scenery of New Zealand as you experience a free fall of eight and a half seconds.
