Slate is an ideal stone to use when constructing an outdoor patio. The stone comes in a variety of colors and textures. In fact, it's the stone's natural tones and colors that allow it to blend in to the outdoor environment. By using slate tile, you can create a streamlined and modern looking patio. At the same time, choosing slate with an earthy tone makes your patio look like a natural part of your garden area. You can either use slate tiles that are all the same dimension or you can use different shapes to create a unique patio design. Instructions as follows: Firstly, map out the dimensions for the proposed patio by using a tape measure. If you are creating a curved patio, use a colored spray paint to mark where the patio will begin and end. For a rectangular patio, pound wooden stakes in the ground at each corner. Then attach twine to tie each of the stakes together. Secondly, excavate the area that you have blocked off with a shovel. The depth of the excavated area should be deep enough for four inches of gravel and approximately two inches of sand. Most slate tiles are only a quarter of an inch thick. If you are using large pieces of slate with a larger depth, consider using more sand and digging a deeper hole. Thirdly, with the site completely excavated, pour a four-inch thick layer of gravel into the hole. Use a shovel to pack down the gravel and make it level. Fourthly, cover the gravel with rolls of landscape fabric. Landscape fabric is optional, but it is good to use if you want to eliminate the possibility of weeds growing through the gravel and between the slate tiles. Roll out the fabric and cut it to fit. Fifthly, dump two inches of sand over the entire landscape fabric surface. Then wet down the sand with a water hose and use a piece of lumber to screed (level) the sand. Drag the piece of lumber over the sand bed until it is flat and level. Sixthly, snap a chalk line down the center of the sand bed. Begin laying the slate tiles down this line. Then begin laying neighboring slate tiles from left to right until reaching the end. Lightly pound the tiles into the sand with a rubber mallet. Keep the exact amount of space between each tile. The amount of space should be small, approximately 1/8-inch apart. Make sure that the tiles are even with each other. If they are not even, add or subtract sand below the tiles until they are level. You may need to cut tiles once you reach the end of the patio. Use a masonry saw to cut tiles to fit. Seventhly, once all of the tiles are laid out, cover the patio with more sand. Sweep sand into the cracks between the tiles using a broom. Then spray down the tiled patio in order to compact the sand in the cracks. Tips & Warnings Slate tiles can be rather fragile. Be careful when handling the tiles and when pounding them into the sand bed. Do not pound them too hard or you might crack them.
