Do you use mind maps? They're amazing writing tools. I've been using them for many years, and couldn't imagine writing without them. In this article, let's look at three productive and profitable ways to make the most of them. Get Inspired All writers need inspiration. These tools can provide that for you daily. For example, I have many maps which I use to compile keywords for projects. The visual display helps your mind to make associations. Most mapping applications have the option to insert notes on each node. Check your favorite application for a brainstorming mode. Most applications include this. You can add new thoughts to your map by pressing the Enter key, or a function key. If you've lost inspiration for a project, or aren't sure how to handle a project, create a visual map. Recently one of my students was procrastinating on a copywriting project. To help him to get his inspiration back, I asked him to create a diagram of all the elements of the project. This usually helps. When you have a visual overview of what the project entails, it will spark insights, and you'll get inspired all over again. You can also use your tools at the end of a project. I tend to write novels by the seat of my pants, with minimal outlining. Once I've completed a chapter, I enter the scenes onto a map so that I can see which characters were present in a scene, where each scene was located, and what goals each character had for each scene. Before I start work on my novel each day, I look at the previous chapter's mind map. This always inspires me, and makes my writing flow. Get Organized Mindmaps help you to track clients, projects, and your writing. For example, you make notes when you're speaking with a client, and by the time you're half way through the project you have notes on your computer, on sticky notes, and on your phone. Corral your project notes onto a simple map. Once the map becomes too big to take in at a glance, print it out. Cross off items as you complete them. Consider keeping a "dashboard" document. Add all your current projects to the map, then add hyperlinks to files, folders and websites. Most applications will allow you to hoist portions of a map to view it in isolation; if yours doesn't allow this, link several mind maps together. Your dashboard map ensures that you stay organized, and saves time. Make Money When you use mind maps for inspiration and to get organized, you'll get more done. This of course means you make more money. Create a mind map specifically for your goals. Open this mind map before you start writing each day, and review it once a week.
