Fountains introduce serenity to any garden. Moving water attracts a wide variety of wildlife, including butterflies and birds. A limestone rock fountain can be incorporated into a garden bed or built close to a gathering area where it can be enjoyed my many. Limestone is a natural substance that is weather-resistant and durable. Limestone fountains vary widely in design and scale. The imaginative limestone fountain style featured in this article creates the captivating effect of water spurting from the ground. Constructing this small limestone fountain requires few tools and can be completed in an afternoon. Instructions as follows: Firstly, dig a hole that is 5 inches deeper and 2 inches wider than the 5-gallon bucket. Keep the edges of the hole straight. Place the bucket into the hole and check that it is level. Remove the bucket from the hole. Secondly, dig out grass or soil in a rectangle around the hole. The rectangle needs to be at least 30 by 36 inches. Keep the hole in the center of the rectangle. Dig the rectangle out 4 inches below ground level. Remember to keep the edges of the hole level. This completes the hole for fountain bucket and surrounding area where the rocks will go. Thirdly, spread a thin layer of sand on the rectangular area surrounding the hole. Dampen, pack and apply more sand until there is a 2-inch layer of sand in the rectangular area. Fourthly, add about 3 inches of gravel and 3 inches of sand to the bottom of the bucket hole. Place the bucket into the hole once again, and check to ensure it is flush with the cubic stone area. Add sand or gravel to raise the bucket, if necessary. When the bucket is level, place it into the hole and pack sand around it. Fifthly, clean any sand or dirt out of the bucket. Place 2 bricks on top of each other in the bottom of the bucket. Adjust the bricks until they are level. Place the small pump on top of the 2 bricks in the center of the bucket. The water tube part of the pump should come about 1 inch above the bucket. Run the electrical cord over the lip of the bucket and toward the nearest electrical source. Sixthly, cut a piece of landscape cloth to fit inside the stone area. Cut a hole in the center for the bucket. Seventhly, fill the bucket three-quarters full of water. Plug the pump in and adjust water flow for desired fountain height. Eighthly, place the metal grate over the entire stone area. Make sure the water tube fits through a hole in the grate. Use bolt cutters to enlarge the opening if necessary. Ninthly, place the limestone rocks on the grate around the water tube. Put them as close together as possible, but still leave room for the water to flow back between the rocks. Stack them to the desired height and arrange them in the desired pattern. Tips & Warnings Use plants or stones to conceal the pump's electrical cord. Add a second layer of landscape fabric above the grate and place small pebble between the limestones. Wear leather gloves when moving stones. Have an assistant help when moving heavy loads. Turn the fountain pump off and store for the winter in cold climates. Fill the bucket with fresh water weekly.
