With every major health system in Houston having orplanning to implement an HIE for their organization, Healthconnectwill work with them to link their HIEs to each other, creating aninteroperable, standards-based network of networks that adds valueto the IT investments these health systems have already made. "We're excited to begin working with Medicity to establish asafe, efficient, low-cost way to share medical information amongproviders," said Lamar Pritchard, Healthconnect board memberand dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Houston."We selected Medicity's technology due to their experience andtrack record of interfacing with all major EHR systems currently in use by area hospitals. Medicity has helpedmore than 800 hospitals achieve connectivity without disruptingexisting systems. One of the biggest benefits of the technology isits ability to easily integrate with any major EHR system, whichwill facilitate rapid implementation in Houston and allow forsustainable growth in the future." This initial phase is designed to address one ofHouston's long-standing concerns: overcrowding and over-utilizationof emergency department services. "Emergency care is a priority for Healthconnect because of thelarge population of uninsured people in our area," said JimLangabeer, Healthconnect's CEO. "By seamlessly connecting toeach other, facilities will be able to quickly learn if patients− both uninsured and insured − have been previouslyseen in another emergency department and can then provide the mostappropriate care. This is an important first step toward achievingour goal of complete connectivity in our world-class healthcarecommunity." "As the industry moves toward greater provider accountabilityand outcomes-based reimbursement models, collaboration amongproviders is essential," added Brent Dover, Medicitypresident. "We are excited to work with Healthconnect in itseffort to enhance quality of care and lower costs.".
