If you want to bring a touch of nature to your décor, consider slate tile. Slate provides a natural look that blends with many interior design styles from mountain rustic to French country. You don't need to be an interior designer to decorate with slate, but it helps if you have an eye for color. The overall style depends on the way in which you use slate rock and incorporate other accessories and show pieces in your home. Instructions as follows: Firstly, know what color scheme works well with slate. Most slate rock has a blend of colors and includes tones of green, gray, purple, black and red. You can pull one of the colors from the slate for the color of the walls, for accent rugs or for furniture. Colors found in nature such as gold, rich browns, white and blue compliment slate, so you can use them to expand your color palette. Secondly, use slate flooring in your living room or kitchen. Known as a durable and beautiful flooring option, you can draw attention to a specific room by using sate. Small tiles provide a broken look, resembling the rocks in a stream, where larger tiles offer a smooth, continuous look. The size you use depends on your personal taste. Thirdly, add a slate backsplash to match flooring in the kitchen. Most interior designers will use the same tile for the flooring and the backsplash. Changing the size of the tile for the backsplash can be disharmonizing to the design, so keep the size consistent. Fourthly, accent a room with a slate table. You can find slate tables ranging from end tables to coffee tables to dining room tables. Some companies sell end tables and coffee tables in matching sets. Don't cover the slate with clutter or too many home accessories. Fifthly, make your fireplace a focal point with slate tile. Laying tile around the edge of your fireplace and accenting it with a wood or stone mantle can create a focal point in any room. Depending on the location of your fireplace, you may want to use the slate tile to make a matching hearth. Sixthly, incorporate water features with slate tile. Designers often use slate to give an indoor fountain a natural appearance. The larger the waterfall, the more noticeable the feature will be. In order to display the fountain to its full potential, don't set it on a slate table. For a modern look, set the fountain on a glass table. Tips & Warnings Use a sealant to increase the longevity of slate tiles used for flooring or backsplashes or incorporated into water features. Too much slate in one room detracts from your design; instead of standing out, things start to blend together.
