Moving—it’s a milestone event that generates excitement and anxiety in the mover. There is so much to do before the move, so much to remember and so many preparations to make that the task can seem overwhelming. Whether the mover is a college student heading out on their own for the first time or an experienced adult changing houses or apartments (again), moving can take hours as possessions are organized, categorized, packed and labeled. The tension ratchets up when it comes to the task of packing expensive, fragile valuables. Will they arrive at their destination in the same condition as when they left—or will they be shattered and destroyed by the rigors of the journey? Utilizing the following materials and packing tips will reduce the risk of damage to fragile possessions. Suggested materials: • Packing and masking tape • Permanent Markers • Original product boxes • Corflute boxes • EPE foam • Bubble wrap • Styrofoam peanuts Packing tape works best for securing boxes. Masking tape is a close second but works better for creating labels. The best choice of marker is a thick, black permanent ink marker. A fine tip marker will create letters that are too thin to easily read in the dark interior of a moving van. Corflute boxes are made from corrugated plastic sheets. They are economical choices because they are sturdy and reusable. There are several internet vendors that sell collapsible versions of these boxes. Easily stored in any closet, these containers will be ready for the next move saving the mover time and money. EPE foam is an environmentally safe foam material that has exceptional shock proofing and cushioning capabilities. It reduces or negates damage from the inevitable shaking, dropping or sliding that happens to boxes during a move. It is possible to get anti-static EPE foam for transporting electrical items such as TV’s, computer monitors, gaming and sound systems. Bubble wrap and Styrofoam peanuts are old standbys that are perfect choices for cushioning odd—shaped items and filling in corners. Whenever possible pack fragile items in their original packing. Glassware and China When packing glass items and china it is essential to enclose each item individually in the packing material of choice. Bubble wrap, blank newsprint (or failing that, regular newspaper) are the best materials for this task; especially for large, awkwardly shaped items like wine carafes and flower vases. Make sure to put a layer of cushioning across the bottom of the box before packing the individually wrapped items in it. Fill in the corners with wadded up newsprint, bubble wrap or Styrofoam peanuts. Electronics If the original packaging is missing then the next best thing to pack electronics in are sturdy corflute boxes using ant-static foam for cushioning. Choose a container that is slightly larger than the component and place a cushion layer in it first. Don’t forget to put the power cords and other accessories in the same box as the device they belong too! Check computers, game systems, DVD players, etc. to make sure that they’re empty.
