You've probably heard the term 'get outside of the box'. It's a reference to breaking free of convention to find new territory for your ideas to explore. But, contrary to popular belief; creativity happens INSIDE the box. Understanding the difference between INSIDE the box thinking and OUTSIDE the box thinking can make all the difference to the success of the solutions you generate. Before writing for a living, I spent 14 years designing products for companies to sell all around the world. I witnessed many creatives tear their hair out trying to turn some wild or hopeful imaginings into something worth while. I spent many days beating my own head against the wall trying to have a 'eureka' moment that never came... and never will. What I learned is that eureka's don't exist. What does exist, is the moment when your preparation and focused goals meet your imagination. Imagination, not creativity, happens outside the box. Imagination is free and goes in any direction it wants; uncontrolled and unfocused. It has a purpose; discovery. It's like dreaming and can break down barriers in your creative explorations. But the things generated from 'out of the box' imaginative thinking, while fun and maybe inspiring, aren't very useful until they are focused. For example: imagine if I told you to draw a line a million miles long. You could just head off in any direction and run wild. But what if I said the line had to be a million miles long, and has to stay inside a square that is one foot by one foot, and you can never cross the line and never repeat the shape of the path? Now, you have to be creative! Creativity happens INSIDE the box. The box is made of constraints that you decide on and place on your idea in order to focus it. The box and its constraints invite creativity. In fact, if you are going to take the full journey of your story, these constraints will demand you become more creative! (Non-creatives looking for creative solutions should think in terms of goals, target market, and available resources while creating your 'box'.) Getting INSIDE the box means that you need to design a series of constraints aimed at specific goals you have in mind for your story. All ideas can't be all things to all stories. What kind of audience are you aiming at? What resources do you have available? What's the message? Who's in the story? There are a lot of questions to think about when shaping a creative idea. But the point, the goal, is to make informed decisions about the constraints you want to put on your idea in order to focus it. Choosing the right constraints to focus your creativity will not only make it more likely that you'll hit your target with a better story in the end, but you'll have more fun getting there. You will also have greater command over the decisions you will be forced to make in the process. Start thinking INSIDE 'The Box' to focus your creative thinking. Success follows preparation. Creativity is set free when it is given constraints.
