Curved edge countertops may include round edges, eliminating the sharp points of traditional counters, or be in an entire circular or oval shape. Adding a mosaic to a countertop adds even more distinction to one with curved edges. There are a number of mosaic types from simple tile patterns to ornate depictions of entire scenes. Base your mosaic type on your personal preferences and style. Instructions as follows: Firstly, create your specific mosaic design along with the tile type you'll use. Round tiles complement the curved edges of your countertop and may be found in glass, ceramic, stone or porcelain. Square tiles can be cut with special tools to compensate for the curves of your countertop if needed. Purchase tiles all of the same thickness for a flat countertop. Secondly, complete the preparation work for installing the mosaic on your curved edge counters. You can either leave the original countertop surface in place or strip it down to plywood. Leaving the original surface in place gives more thickness and sturdiness to the project. Clean the surfaces and the slate tiles to remove dust and dirt. Thirdly, plan the layout of the mosaic by doing a dry run on the countertop surface. Cut any square tiles if needed to conform to the curve of the countertop. Wear safety goggles and use a mosaic nipper tool to break small bits from the tile until you form a rounded edge. If you plan to cover the vertical edges of the countertop with mosaic as well, cut these pieces carefully and smooth any sharp edges with wet/dry sandpaper or a metal file. Fourthly, use a mortar with a cement base or mortar that's specifically designed for mosaics. Mix up the mortar according to brand instructions. Fifthly, spread a layer of mortar along the countertop edges, making the layer thick enough to grip the tiles without causing too much to ooze into the cracks between the tiles. Push the edge tiles into place. Sixthly, repeat the spreading and tile pressing process until your countertop mosaic is complete. For best results, do not leave more than 1/8 inch between tiles. Allow the mortar to dry based on your product instructions. Seventhly, apply a layer of tile grout to the surface once the mortar dries. Spread it throughout the entire surface, filling in all the cracks, with a grout float. Let the grout set for approximately 20 minutes and wipe off any excess using a moist sponge, being careful not to remove grout from between the tiles. Rinse and wring out the sponge frequently. Eighthly, allow proper drying time for the grout and wipe down and polish the tile with a soft, lint-free cloth. Apply a grout sealant to the surface to protect the grout from food staining and to extend the life of your artwork.
