Whether you have a stainless steel sink or porcelain, a kitchen sink or bathroom sink, taking proper care of the sink can keep it looking new and make it last much longer. You can't avoid getting some dirt and stains in your sink, but with regular cleaning, the stains are easy to remove. Watermarks are another major problem with sinks; water can leave permanent marks on a sink if not cared for properly. It's also important to pay attention to the type of sink you have. Copper sinks require more careful consideration than stainless steel sinks. Instructions as follows: Firstly, wipe common dirt and stains away with soapy water or an ammonia-based cleaner that is not a sink with a scouring pad if the sink is extremely dirty or there are stuck-on stains. Always scour in the direction of the sink's finish lines so you don't scratch it. Fifthly, clean limescale buildup with a limescale remover, particularly if your water has a lot of minerals that can deposit on the sink. This buildup is why drying the sink is important. Sixthly, avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive materials in copper sinks, because these can damage the copper surface. Soapy water is all that should be needed, but you have to dry the sink to ensure the patina changes are even throughout the sink. Seventhly, disinfect the sink by wiping the surface with diluted household bleach or letting a 50-50 bleach and water solution sit in the sink before washing and rinsing it. Eighthly, rub cleaners with bleach or other chemical cleaners over the entire surface of the sink to avoid spots of discoloration. Sometimes if you apply a cleaner like bleach to only a small spot, that spot can become lighter than the rest of the sink. Ninthly, do not cut on the sink surface or set hot pans directly into the sink. Tenthly, always rinse food and beverages from the sink to avoid permanent staining of the surface. Eleventh, line your sink bottom with a stainless steel bottom grid instead of rubber mats or dishpans to prevent rust or pitting. The use of a liner is optional, but the stainless steel grid is the best option if you want to use a liner. Tips & Warnings If you worry that a cleaning product or scouring pad may be too harsh for your sink, do not use it and find an alternative. Always read product labels carefully to make sure a cleaning product or method is acceptable for your type of sink. Don't mix bleach with other chemicals, including dish washing detergent, because this can release a dangerous gas. Read labels carefully to determine if a product is safe to mix with bleach.
