We all know that we are at the cusp of a revolution that is going to change the way we think and engage in discussions forever. The moment we log in to our social networking and micro blogging accounts we are well aware of what the people are ‘talking about’ or what is a ‘trending topic’ in our city and country. The voice of the public had been a stymied force for possibly the better part of our history and where it usually used to find a place used to be ‘call in’ programmes on television. Everyone has witnessed street marches in the 1960s and the period following it, but without proper co-ordination among the group any movement is bound to collapse and they did with alarming regularity. The first step towards sharing and using information constructively was first provided by the wonderful invention that is the internet and the correct channelling of People Opinion has been changed forever. The very first step toward proper channelling of information was taken with the invention of the internet and in fact the Queen Elizabeth of the House of Windsor sent the first e-mail back in 1976! However, it was not till the 1990s that the e-mail became the foremost tool of global communication and by extension people opinion. Them e-mail addresses and accounts became the basis upon which someone could create their identities on social networking websites, micro blogging sites, blog sites and so on and so forth. It can even be said that the e-mail acted and still acts as the virtual ‘address’ of millions of internet users around the world. It is well and truly one of the cornerstones of the virtual life of any individual. Nowadays, we can even sign petitions online and send it to the concerned people via social media. In fact, such petitions have been acted upon. Moreover, these days there are websites that have been established for the purpose of gauging the pulse of the public by conducting live and interactive online voting on topics that directly or indirectly affect them. One of the best aspects of online voting is that it’s live, its real time and it’s quick. People can quickly get to know whether their thoughts and opinions are in concurrence or a disagreement with the majority or not. In addition to that these websites conduct dummy elections and also furnish its subscribers with election news. Although Election News is beamed with a feverish alacrity across the cable channels these websites provide people with news that is relevant to the topics that they have participated in. These websites also provide people to participate in opinionated view on a particular product or service or anything in particular through an online survey, which goes a long way in showing people what the public exactly think of it. An Online survey does the same work as what the questionnaire used to do before the advent of the internet. However, it must be said it is a whole lot more easier to indulge in it online than going through a questionnaire.
