QUEBEC Amir Khadir, the only Qu bec solidaire Member of theNational Assembly, said he hopes the arrest early Thursday of hisdaughter Yalda Machouf-Khadir is not an attempt to intimidate him. Machouf-Khadir, 19, was taken away from the family home inhandcuffs, by Montreal police. Khadir said his wife, Nima Machouf, read the search warrant policeofficers brought to the family s Montreal residence at about 6a.m., as part of an operation arresting 11 people, includingMachouf-Khadir s boyfriend who was also in the home. The warrant referred to the vandalizing April 12 of theBourassa-Sauv riding office of Line Beauchamp, the formereducation minister. Khadir also said he hoped it was not a politically-motivated showof force by the police on the eve of the Montreal Grand Prix. In an interview, shown on the RDI network, Machouf said police weresearching for articles of clothing, but left instead withnewspapers and tracts. They probably did not find what they were looking for, Machoufsaid, suggesting the aim of the arrest was to intimidateprotesters. But it creates more anger, Machouf said, noting other parentsfind themselves in the same situation. Earlier, Premier Jean Charest, when asked whether the 11 arrestswere related to the Grand Prix, declined to comment. But he did say that, There is no reason anyone should disrupt theGrand Prix. In tourism, it is the biggest event in Canada. Not just forMontreal and for Quebec. And when you attack the Grand Prix, it isn t the Quebecgovernment that is under attack. It is all Quebecers. Khadir said the police were doing their job and courts would decidethe issue. My daughter and myself are no different from other people whohave been arrested for who have received fines, he said, addingthat everyone is equal before the law and presumed innocent untilproof of the contrary. Khadir was detained, handcuffed and fined $494 under Quebec sHighway Safety Code because he participated in a Quebec Citydemonstration Tuesday night declared by police to be illegal. Commenting on his detention, without arrest, Khadir said hecommitted an act of civil disobedience against Bill 78, an unjustlaw, even though that law, calling for stiffer fines, is notcurrently being applied by either the Montreal or Quebec Citypolice. Khadir said his action was inspired by the civil disobedience ofMartin Luther King and Mohandas Gandhi. Asked who might be his daughter s inspiration, Khadir suggestedher mother, who was often in trouble with police in her native Iranfor opposing the Islamic Republic. Khadir said allegations of corruption in the Charest governmentinvolving nominations, ministers who have resigned, the Plan Nordand the construction industry have transformed the tuition disputeinto a social dispute involving others in addition to students. This has led to many actions, generally legal and peaceful, Khadir said. The Quebec government has largely contributed to the degradationof the social climate by refusing all acceptable compromise withthe student movement and by imposing an odious law to infringe ondemocratic rights. Charest rarely misses a chance to note that Parti Qu b coisleader Pauline Marois, like Khadir and most PQ MNAs, wears the redcloth square symbol of the students action, Khadir said. The premier, Khadir added, associates the red square withviolence and chaos. He tries to intimidate the public. "He tries to scare the public and intimidate oppositionMNAs. Twitter.com @doughertkr.
