Researchers have found that almost half of the cats carry these bacteria in their saliva. The fleas present in the cat body transmit this bacterium in them. It is transmitted to human through licking, biting or scratching. It causes swelling of lymph node on the area which is bitten. These occur in the form of a small papule which is not at all painful but many mistaken it as a bug bite. They can be on hands, arms, neck or scalp. After a few weeks of getting bitten a small papule is developed on the area where the bacteria enter into the blood stream. Later after a couple of weeks it causes the area to swell that causes swelling of the lymph on and around the areas of the papule. The size lymph node varies in size that can range from up to half to two inches. Kids may also suffer from flu like symptoms such as fever, headache, rashes, vomiting, sore throat etc. It is a granulomatous inflammation disease causing inflammation of lymph nodes. The cat scratch disease also depends upon the organs being affected. In case of swelled lymph near the ear can cause parinaud’s ocular glandular syndrome, optic neuritis, and bacillary angiomatosis. Sometimes the symptoms of the disease can stay up to a few weeks or even 2 months can also disappear without treatment. Those people undergoing treatments for diseases of liver, cancer, HIV AIDS etc are more susceptible for cat scratch disease. Though there are 90% chances of contracting cat scratch disease from your kitty avoid rough play with your cat. There might be a possibility that you can get scratched by your cat. Wash your scratches or the bites immediately with water and soap and let the germs get washed off. Control flea infestation on your kitties by keeping them clean and indoors. Do not allow your kitty to lick the wounds as there are maximum risks of transmitting the bacterium into the body. It is better to get in touch with your doctor if you get scratched by your cat and suffer from flu like symptoms of fever, headache and back pain.
