We’ve all heard it before: the voice which is so loud that it hurts your ears. On the other hand, we’ve not heard it before as well: the voice which is so soft that we have to ask the speaker to repeat himself/herself. In both cases, too much or too little volume definitely sends the wrong message. Whether that message is correct or not, we often label people according to the amount of volume they use in speaking. If you speak too softly, others might consider you shy, introverted, diffident, and probably lacking in confidence. Are any of those adjectives an apt description of you? Another possibility is that others may think you have something to hide. If you are loud, people may judge you as being insensitive, boorish, aggressive and probably overly confident. Do any of these traits describe you? I certainly want you to display confidence in yourself. Appearing to be overly confident or, on the opposite end, lacking in confidence because of the wrong volume, however, is not the best means of achieving success in your life, either professionally or personally. Volume is a learned habit. You were born with a normal volume level - neither too loud nor too soft. The problem is that your inner ear, which is how you hear yourself in your head, is most comfortable with the volume you have been using out of habit. If your volume is an issue, then you need to not only retrain your inner ear to recognize and accept a normal level of sound, but also learn how to normalize your sound. The best way to do this is through voice training. By discovering your ‘real’ voice, which is voiced sound produced in your chest cavity, you will find your volume normalizing. It is amazing to see and hear how this works. Because most people are not using their chest as their primary sounding board, they are relying solely on their other 4 resonators – the voice box, throat, mouth and nasal cavities. Sound produced in this manner is thinner in quality, higher in pitch, and definitely young-sounding. When you begin to power your voice with the addition of your 5th resonator, your chest cavity, you will discover a richer, warmer, deeper voice that will sound more mature. And, your volume will automatically normalize: 1. if you are soft-spoken, the power of the resonating chamber in the chest will increase your volume by 10 to 15%; 2. if you are too loud, the resonating chamber will automatically soften your sound by eliminating the stridency. You have a better voice inside of you; you also have a normal volume level. Discover your ‘real’ voice and start sending the right message.
