We all love the sound of bubbling water in our gardens--one of the most relaxing sounds after a hard day at work. We can drown our tensions and troubles in the fountain rather than in martinis. Or at least enjoy the fountain and the martini simultaneously. Fountains can be ornate three-tiered, 8' high, metal or concrete structures or simple submersible pump-driven water in an ornamental pot or fountain head. Building a simple yet wonderful fountain can be done in an afternoon. Instructions as follows: Firstly, dig a hole in the garden slightly wider, but about 4" shallower than the tub you are using. The hole will probably be almost 2' deep. A horse drinking tub from the feed store is much cheaper than any plastic tub from the pond or big box store. Buy a round or oval hard rubber pot by Rubbermaid that will last forever. Secondly, place your tub in the hole, leaving about 4" of the tub sticking out of the ground. Thirdly, fill thebathtub with water. That will hold the tub in place while you fill around it. Fourthly, using the sand, fill in around the tub, so it is firm and level. Use water from the hose to pack in the sand firmly. Fifthly, spray the cinder blocks black so they don't show in the water. Cover all sides and the insides as well. You want them to be almost invisible in the black tub. They take about 20 minutes to dry, Sixthly, put the cinder blocks in the water, stacked on top of each other sideways so the total height is 16". Seventhly, attach the flexible tubing to the pump. Fasten with a hose clamp. Eighthly, place the pump on an upside down clay pot next to the cinder blocks. Ninthly, thread the tubing up through the hole in the pot. Often there is a ready-made hole near the bottom on the side. If not, use the hole that exists in the bottom already. If the hose is not wide enough and water escapes, make the hose wider by sliding a larger piece of tubing over it until it fits snugly through the hole. Tenthly, put the pump on top of the terra-cotta pot that is in the tub upside down or on top of the third cinder block. Plug in the pump. The pot will fill with water, so be ready with the hose to fill the tub more. Eleventh, fill around the 4" of the exposed tub sides with soil and with flat rocks to disguise it. Twelfth, plant up the soil around the pot or mulch it until you are ready to plant. Place the flat rocks on the soil at the top of the tub to disguise the top. Let the rocks cantilever over the top about an inch or two. Thirteenth, set up one pot that holds water and fill it with water. (This is not a permanent structure and only good for a few weeks or for some special occasion.) Fourteenth, put a tiny submersible pump in the bottom. Fifteenth, attach flexible tubing to the pump and thread it through the hole that will be the top pot. Put the top pot on a cinder block to hold it in place. Sixteenth, plug in the pump and adjust the tilt of the top pot accordingly. Hide the cinder block and tubing with plants.
