Bamboo fencing adds an Asian feel to any yard and is also a good ecological choice for fencing, as bamboo is considered a renewable resource because of its fast growing rate. There are many different styles of bamboo fencing, from a living bamboo fence to split-reed bamboo rolls that attach to existing fencing or the more work-intensive full-reed fences built in panels and attached to fence posts. All are options for a do-it-yourself job. Instructions as follows: Firstly, cut the 2-inch by 3-inch lumber into four lengths the height of thefence, and four to the width of each fence panel between fence posts. Fences are anywhere from 5 to 8 feet high, while panels are typically around 4 to 5 feet wide. Miter the ends of these planks to 45 degrees and form them into two large frames with the mitered ends forming the 90-degree corners. Secure the planks together with 4-inch galvanized screws through the corner joints. Secondly, lay one of the frames down flat, and place bamboo canes either vertically or horizontally over the frame, depending on the style you want. The canes should be close together and cover the entire frame. Secure each cane in place with a 2-inch galvanized nail through each end into the frame. Trim the ends of the bamboo so they do not go over the edges of the frame, using a hacksaw. Thirdly, position the second frame over the top of the bamboo, even with the first frame, to sandwich the bamboo between the two frames. Secure the second frame with the 4-inch galvanized screws through the frame and bamboo and into the first frame. This kind of fence panel is particularly useful when both sides of the fence need to be attractive. Repeat until the desired number of panels is reached. Fourthly, cut the fence posts to the desired height of the fence, plus 2 feet for the portion in the ground. Dig a 2-foot-deep hole with the post hole digger and insert the first post. Backfill the hole around the post with the spade. Check that the post is level before you fill the final portion of the hole. Fifthly, position the first panel alongside the fence post. Secure the panel to the post with 4-inch galvanized screws every 10 inches through both sides of the panel frame into the post. If you want the panel to sit off the ground a couple of inches, account for this in the height of the fence posts. Sixthly, position a second post on the other end of the panel, and mark where it should go. Dig a second post hole in this spot. Insert and secure the post, and then attach the other side of the panel to the second post. Continue in this manner until all the fence panels and posts are installed. Digging and installing one post at a time allows for more accurate fence installation, rather than digging all the holes first, then finding out halfway down the fence that your measurement was off.
