Helpful Steps and Guide on Carpet Cleaning to Remove Gasoline Spills and Smell

Home Improvement,Fashion & Cosmetics,Health
Gasoline on carpet is a fairly serious matter so no jokes on this one. If the amount is small, you may be able to take care of the spill yourself.

Due to how flammable gasoline is, you really need to be sure that you've removed all of the spill. If an enormous amount has been spilled on the carpet, you may need to have it replaced as it has saturated the padding. This can be a fire hazard so please contact a professional.

Static electricity can ignite the fuel so be sure to act quickly to remove it. First blot up the spill using paper towels. Continue until you've removed as much of the gasoline as possible. Be absolutely certain to dispose of the paper towels in a safe manner as they are highly flammable.

When removing gasoline smell from your carpet, you must follow a specific procedure. The carpet's hairy surface traps the odor, making it stay there for extended periods. You will need the combined efforts of two of the most powerful natural deodorizers - vinegar and baking soda.

Now take a generous amount of baking soda or kitty litter and pile it upon the spill. Let it remain there for at least a couple hours. It will absorb more of the gasoline as well as reduce the odor. It may be wise to leave it there overnight.

The standard method for cleaning carpets with soap and water will only make things worse. The smell of gasoline is pungent and causes a series of effects adverse to your health. The moment the liquid spills on your car, body, or carpet, its stench will remain for days, until a proper solution is applied. Soap and water won't do much against gasoline smell, so you have to apply special measures.

Apply a dry cleaning solvent, following the instructions on the bottle. Any home improvement center sells them. Ask one of the carpet guys which one he recommends. You need to be sure that it's safe to use on gasoline.

Coffee grounds neutralize almost any smell. I would take some and rub it into the carpeting where the gas was spilled, leave it a day or two, and then vacuum out. You may need to repeat a couple of times.

The final step is to mix the detergent solution listed above. Apply it to the gasoline stain with a gentle blotting motion. Remove it by patting with paper towels. You do not want to rub at the stain as it will simply spread the gas as well as damage your carpet. Just blot the solution on using a sponge, and then blot it off with paper towels. Continue until you can no longer smell gasoline. Be sure to dispose of the paper towels in a safe manner as they will be flammable. Dispose of the sponge as well as it will have been contaminated with gasoline.

If you can still smell gasoline after having followed the steps above, you may want to contact a carpet professional as it may have saturated the padding. It's better to be safe than sorry.
