As an Internet/web copywriter by profession, I do get asked about how to write good content, especially by people outside of my field. Of course, creating copy is not an exact science, but there are a few techniques that you can use to make the process easier and faster. These include these 3 tips: 1) Read, research, and read a little bit more. Think of reading other people's works as gathering fuel to keep the fires of inspiration roaring. You can get fresh ideas from reading what people have already written on the topic, and it's not just in terms of learning new concepts. Even if you end up with the same old ideas, you can learn how to communicate those in a new, entirely different way, such as using new terms or idioms. 2) Always remember to ask "how" and "why." If you're tasked to write a series of articles, simply parroting out the ideas you've gotten from research won't be enough. Especially if all information you've obtained from all those different sources is just enough for one or two article. If you start asking "how" or "why," then you can reframe the stuff you know into another piece. For example, if you've already written an article with the title of "A Backpacker's Guide to Manila," then you can rewrite that into "5 Reasons Why Manila is Great for Backpackers" or "How to Go Around Manila for Backpackers." 3) Have a few templates handy. Admittedly, it's not just a battle for good content, but whoever puts those articles or blog posts out the fastest. And it's especially true if you're a copywriter with a deadline to beat. If you have a template--like a "Top 10" list for blog posts--it would be almost just like filling in the blanks for you. Having a template, though, doesn't mean repeating parts of an article word-for-word, as it should just be a guide to help you out in writing. A well-written piece of copy will not seem like it's been written from a template at all, whether it's a list or how-to type of article. It should read as naturally as possible, even when it is optimized with keywords. With these 3 tips, the question of how to write good content won't be a mystery anymore. All that's left for you to do is to start reading (including guides like this book) and writing.
