DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP is responsible for assigning network configuration parameter to the device (Computer) for making time bound reliable dynamic connection with the network. The network configuration parameter contains information regarding the IP addresses to be allotted, subnet mask, default gateway, domain name server (DNS).When a device is attached to the network then it makes a request for using the network resources then DHCP allots network configuration parameter to the requesting device/client. DHCP is a communication protocol which is responsible for assigning dynamic address to the device attached to the network. It also supports combinations of static and dynamic addressing. DHCP assigns different IP addresses to the device when it connects to the network, thus eliminates the need of an administrator for assigning an IP address to a newly added device. DHCP uses three methods for allocating IP addresses: • Dynamic Allocation: In this mode of allocation network Admin assigns arrange of IP addresses to DHCP. When an external device is connected to the LAN then DHCP assigns an IP address for a particular interval of time and reclaims it if not renewed. • Automatic Allocation: This method of allocation resembles to the Dynamic allocation. A Network Admin assigns a range of IP addresses. When an external device is connected to the LAN and request for an IP address is made by device for establishing a dynamic connection then DHCP assigns an IP address to it. But the DHCP also keeps a record of past IP address assignments so that if the same device is connected to the network in future then the same IP address will be assigned to the device which has been previously assigned to it. • Static Allocation: In this mode of allocation the DHCP server allocates an IP address to the connecting devices based on the table with IP address pairs which are properly maintained by Network Admin. Only devices which are listed in the table will be allocated an IP address. Steps for installing DHCP server on Windows: 1. Make a click on the “Start” button and select “Control Panel” from the Start menu. 2. Select “Network and Internet” and a new window appear on your screen, click on the “Network Sharing Center”. 3. Under This connection uses the following items, select “Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)” or “Internet Protocol Version 6(TCP/IPv6)” according to available option. 6. Then Internet Protocol Version 4/6 properties appears on your screen, Select the “Obtain an IP address automatically” radio button from the list. 7. Now select “Obtain DNS server address automatically” radio button, then a new window appears on your screen then click on “Advance Settings”. 8. Then it will open Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog appears on your screen, select “WINS” tab. Under the NETBIOS setting, select the “Default:” radio button.
