Groton - More than 70 windows at Fitch High School will be repaired thissummer, at the expense of the installer, settling an issue that hasfestered among the town, the manufacturer and the installer sincethe $23 million high school expansion project was completed in2008. Cherry Hill Glass, of Branford, installed more than 300 windows inthe school. Last week Town Manager Mark Oefinger told the councilthat the windows had not been constructed properly. "We did not get what we paid for," he said. "We believe thatcertain fabrication techniques were not followed per themanufacturer's instructions and that's what we are trying toovercome." EFCO Windows, a national company, manufactured the windows.
CherryHill, put them together and installed them. Some of the windowsleaked around the frames. Oefinger said there was no damage to the building or walls and noclassrooms became unusable. He said there were two types of windowswith problems.
"On one type of window we all agree on what the fix needs to be,"he said. "The biggest culprit turns out to be the panels above themthat were not fabricated as they should have been. About 70 piecesof glass will be removed, resealed and reinstalled." Windows in the atrium area, called "curtain walls," have adifferent type of problem, Oefinger said. He said all the extrudedmetal in those floor-to-ceiling windows would have to be coveredwith a metal cap, and re-glued and resealed.
He said Cherry Hillassured him they could fix the problem "That's a lot of metal extrusion," he said. "The intent is to haveit all done this summer." Oefinger said also said that contrary to the initial wishes of thetown and school officials, only the windows that showed flaws willbe reinforced. "Remember, until recently we wanted all of them done," he said."We've learned after three or four years that just 70-somethingleak. So we are focusing on that, and doing a lot of work on thewarranty for the rest of the windows in case something happens inthe coming years.
